First off, can any of you remember a day when both local dailies had wraparound front pages? (Can’t find the Globe wrapper, but this interactive feature comes close.)

For Once, Boston Globe at a DisADvantage

As the hard reading staff has noted on numerous occasions, it’s normally the Boston Herald that gets shortchanged in the full-page-ad department, especially in terms of advocacy ads.

But not today.

The outfit that funded the ad, Alzheimer’s Impact Movement, describes itself as “a nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization working in strategic partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association to make Alzheimer’s disease a national priority.”

And Ed Markey? He’s co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease. So good idea to suck up to him, although not sure why the Herald is the place to do it.

Regardless, here’s another thing today’s Herald has that the Globe doesn’t: coverage of Chet Curtis’s wake yesterday.

Finally, the Herald has also cornered the market on Romney Redux reporting, with the normally level-headed Kimberly Atkins speculating that two-time presidential loser Mitt Romney might go for the hat trick.

Oy.

So the feisty local tabloid goes two-for-three today. Better than average, yes?

 


Super Bowl CongrADulations Spike Boston Herald

In the wake of the New England Patriots’ victory in Stupor Bowl LIII, yesterday’s editions of the Boston dailies marked Celebration Day for the six-time champions.

Begin with the Boston Globe, where the Kraft Family bought page 3 of the Score section.

 

 

From there the congradulations took an oddly retail turn, starting with this sort of oblique Hood full page.

 

 

Next up was this 7-Eleven full page ad offering some Hangover Relief Specials.

And then the back page of Score, brought to you by Pepsi, the Official Soft Drink of the New England Patriots and Super Bowl LIII.

 

 

Yes, that is the Chris Hogan of six targets, zero receptions, and zero yardage in the Big Game. But why get technical about it.

Finally, the A section of the Globe featured this full-page shoutout from Bank of America.

 

 

Of all the ads above, only that last one ran in the Boston Herald.

Today it’s a different story – it’s Tchotchke Day in the local dailies! Here’s a sample of the Patsabilia you can find in today’s Globe.

 

 

And here’s what the Herald is offering.

 

 

Not for nothing, but the hardreading staff gravitates toward the Levitating Football.

One final, poignant note: The thirsty local tabloid, after being passed over by so many advertisers yesterday, was finally reduced to running a congratulatory ad from . . . “the entire staff at the Boston Herald.”

 

 

That’s just, well, sad.


National Grid Gives Globe the Ad, Herald the Air

The four-month National Grid lockout of over 1,200 union gas workers has not only cost the state 1) millions in lost tax revenue and 2) more than $13 million in unemployment benefits according to this WCVB report, it’s also cost the company tens of thousands of dollars for this full-page ad in today’s Boston Globe.

Something the ad failed to note: There’s movement at the State House to “force National Grid to restore health benefits to all locked out workers until contract talks are resolved,” according to WCVB’s report. That could ratchet up the cost of the lockout for the gas company.

Something National Grid failed to note: There are two dailies in this town. Boston Herald readers also have a nickel in this quarter. Time to give the thirsty local tabloid some love, eh?


Marty Walsh’s Ad Promotes #OneBoston(Daily)Day

It seems that Mistah Mayah has been following our kissin’ cousins at One-Daily Town, given that this City of Boston ad appears in today’s Boston Globe but not the Boston Herald.

 

 

That’s the hat trick for Walsh: He also snubbed the thirsty local tabloid the past two years.

Boston Herald Is Sold(er) Out by Departing Patriot

First, disclosure: The hardreading staff has been a New York Giants fan since the days the team was called the New York Football Giants. (Don’t bother sending any abusive comments, splendid readers. Being a Giants fan is punishment enough itself.)

So we’re quite happy that former New England Patriot left tackle Nate Solder is Big Town bound, even at the cost of $62 million over four years, with $35 million guaranteed.

Solder’s feelings about leaving town, however, are mixed, as he mentioned in this full-page ad in yesterday’s Boston Globe.

Crosstown at the Boston Herald there was . . . nothing.

Note to Nate: Some denizens of Patriot Nation actually read the Herald. Apparently you won’t miss them – except with your ad dollars. Maybe Herald scribe Karen Guregian should take back the respectful sendoff she gave you yesterday.

Solder loss leaves hole, concerns

The Patriots have a question mark in a place no team wants a question mark. They’re below par in the one position they can’t afford to be, especially with Tom Brady the linchpin to their success.

Uncertainty with Brady’s blind side protector? That’s not been a major storyline heading into a season for quite some time. Left tackle has been a strength for nearly two decades, from Matt Light to Nate Solder.

 

For the Herald, advertisers present a different kind of blind side: They don’t even see the thirsty local tabloid.

Even Ashton Kutcher’s Kids Blow Off Boston Herald

The other week it was Nike plastering Kyrie Irving all over the Boston Globe and rejecting the Boston Herald.

Adding insult to financial injury, Ashton Kutcher’s two kids do the same today in this full-page salute to their Mom for being chosen Hasty Pudding’s Woman of the Year.

 

 

Two things:

One, do they really call their mother by her first name?

And two, we’re not ashamed to say we had to Google Wyatt and Dimitri to figure out who ran the ad.

As for the thirsty local tabloid, maybe Mila Kunis could carry a copy in Hasty Pudding’s traditional parade, which starts in roughly ten minutes despite multiple protests by students and feminists.

With a slight detour through Cleveland, of course. But no stopping at the Boston Herald.

Gronk, Sun Tzu, flat earth, plant-based diet – totally memelicious, as SB Nation’s Tim Cato chronicles.

None of which, however, does any good for the thirsty local tabloid.


JetBlue Union Pilots Give Boston Herald the Air

For several years now, JetBlue Airways Corporation has had an interesting tagline attached to its logo.

 

Except not you, JetBlue pilots.

According to an Air Line Pilots Association press release, JetBlue has experienced five straight years of earnings growth, but its pilots have gone almost three years without a contract.

Through the first nine months of 2017, JetBlue has reported over $751 million in pretax profit (a 14.3 percent margin), bringing the total to more than $2.5 billion over the last two years since the pilots have been negotiating with the company. Meanwhile, the pilots are still without their first contract since unionizing in 2014, and without market-rate pay.

 

Consequently, the pilots have 1) filed for mediation from the National Mediation Board, and 2) started running this half-page newspaper ad – yesterday in the Boston Globe, today in the New York Times, but not at all in the Boston Herald.

 

 

At its website, the JetBlue pilots have a clever slogan and a count-up clock.

 

 

No doubt the thirsty local tabloid would settle for Ad Contract Above All.


Independence Ad Leaves Boston Dailies Poles Apart

The Polish Cultural Institute has reached up from the Big Town to run this full-page ad in today’s Boston Globe as part of the country’s celebration of 100 years of independence.

Once again the thirsty local tabloid gets the air from an advertiser that thinks Boston is a One-Daily Town.

Of course, if this keeps up, it likely will be.
