Fraidy Local Tabloid Won’t Cover the Boston Globe

What’s with the Boston Herald?

As the hardreading staff noted last month, the Herald resolutely refused to cover the Boston Globe’s Chernobylesque home delivery meltdown earlier this year. The Globe itself labeled it a “delivery debacle,” which we wrote “should be mother’s milk to the thirsty local tabloid but . . . nothing.”

Now comes the juicy memo from Globe editor Brian McGrory (first reported on Thursday in the redoubtable Dan Kennedy’s Media Nation) announcing a “no-sacred-cows analysis of our newsroom and what the Globe should look like in the future.”

McGrory framed it this way: “If a wealthy individual [who, presumably, is not John Henry] was to give us funding to launch a news organization designed to take on The Boston Globe, what would it look like?”

Regardless, don’t you want to hear the flamey local tabloid’s answer to that question? But over the past few days the Heraldniks have given us . . . bupkis.

Some speculate that the Herald has been laying off the Globe because the Globe prints the Herald. But that deal’s been in effect for three years and didn’t keep Herald columnist Howie Carr from lambasting the Globe for its Tsarnaev brothers coverage.

So why is the feisty local tabloid AWOL now?

All suggestions gladly accepted.


Herald Scribe Cohen Goes CNNuclear on Cruz Spox

The Boston Herald’s normally ignorable columnist Adriana (Trumpless GOP Can Kiss Me Goodbye) Cohen, who is almost as big a Trump Chump as her work husband Howie Carr, caused quite a rumpus on CNN yesterday when she went Chernobyl on Ted Cruziac Amanda Carpenter over his alleged extramarital affairs – including with Carpenter.

A leading member of the Trump fan club derailed a CNN segment Friday afternoon by accusing former Ted Cruz spokeswoman Amanda Carpenter of having an affair with the Texan senator. Asked by CNN anchor Kate Bolduan whether she thinks Trump is “ready to move on” from sexualized attacks on Cruz’s wife, Boston Herald columnist Adriana Cohen responded: “Oh, absolutely I think we should move on. Where we should move to is The National Enquirer story that was reported that Ted Cruz has had affairs with five mistresses, including you’ve been named as well, Amanda.” An incensed Bolduan shot back: “I don’t think that’s ‘moving on’ at all.” Unfazed, Cohen repeated the allegation, and then pointedly asked Carpenter: “Will you denounce this story or will you confirm it?” Carpenter called the allegations “smut” and said they were “categorically false.”

 

First of all, Trumpkin?

Excellent!

In today’s Herald, Cohen says . . . nothing.

But we have high hopes for tomorrow.


Herald Fails to Deliver on Globe Meltdown Finale

As the hardreading staff has dutifully noted, the Boston Herald has resolutely refused to cover the Boston Globe’s Chernobylesque home delivery meltdown over the past three months.

And that includes the lately local broadsheet’s white flag in yesterday’s edition.

Globe officials said Tuesday that ACI Media Group will soon no longer handle any of its routes. The Long Beach, Calif., company had retained part of the Globe’s business after the delivery debacle and after the newspaper’s decision to give many routes in the area to its previous vendor, Publishers Circulation Fulfillment Inc.

 

“Transition debacle” should be mother’s milk to the thirsty local tabloid, but . . . nothing.

Boston Herald Fails to Deliver on Globe for 10th Day

As one of the Boston Herald’s 17 home subscribers, the hardreading staff has been waiting patiently for the feisty local tabloid to crow about its successful delivery of the paper while the Boston Globe’s home delivery has gone Chernobyl.

But . . . nothing.

And today . . . still nothing.

As WGBH’s Unsinkable Emily Rooney (and our former partner in airtime) has written, “The Boston Herald has disgracefully reneged it’s [sic] journalistic duty to report this story for one simple reason, The Globe butters the Herald’s bread by being its printer.”

Then again, as Globe reporter Maria Cramer said on WBUR’s Radio Boston yesterday, the Herald has never been shy before about smacking the Globe around.

So why now?

P.S. Oh, yeah – the Globe failed to deliver today’s paper to the hardlyreading staff (we’re now 4-for-9 in the Big Meltdown). And the “delivery delay” list is currently at 113. Burt here’s the funny thing: Globe CEO went on WGBH’s Greater Boston last night and said the really serious delivery problems are in Newton and Pembroke. Except . . . Pembroke isn’t even on the list today. Geez – these people can screw up a screw up.


Boston Herald Fails to Deliver on Globe Meltdown

The hardreading has often labeled our Boston Herald home subscription the Biggest. Waste. Ever. And, for the most part, it has been, thanks to its spasmodic delivery.

But this week, the Boston Globe has given the finicky local tabloid a run for its wasted money.

From the Globe’s website:

“Disruption,” of course, is a euphemism for going Chernobyl for the past four days. Here’s a list of the 90 towns currently experiencing “delivery delays.” (It should be 91, as the hardlyreading staff didn’t get its copy of the Globe today. We did, however, get the other three we subscribe to.)

The oddest thing, though, is how few news outlets are covering the absolute meltdown of the Globe’s home delivery. The redoubtable Dan Kennedy had this piece yesterday at WGBH News, and WBZ’s Jon Keller has been on the story like Brown on Williamson. (Full disclosure: Keller interviewed us for his piece, which obviously gave us a kenahora, since we had gotten the Globe all week up until today.)

Most amazing of all, though: Nothing in the Boston Herald. Nothing.

Man, have they lost their fastball.


No Boston.comment for Boston Herald

The Boston Globe’s Boston.com website has gone Chernobyl, with two recent masthead departures and 12 staffers laid off yesterday.

The Boston Herald’s Owen Boss has the story today:

A dozen employees were laid off today in a shakeup at the Boston Globe’s Boston.com website, a company spokesman has confirmed.

“This is a business decision that is part of a larger effort at Boston Globe Media Partners designed to put Boston.com in a stronger and more sustainable position for growth,” Boston.com said in a prepared statement. “That said, we would be remiss to overlook the fact that this was also a people decision, one that affects the lives of many who have worked tirelessly to support our operation. We are deeply grateful for that work.”

Today’s layoffs follow the recent departure of the website’s editor-in-chief, Tim Molloy, and general manager, Corey Gottlieb, and are part of a change in “operational vision” for the website, Boston.com said.

 

Spokesman, statement – whatever. Sure looks like no one at the Globe was willing to talk to the feisty local tabloid.

But they’re certainly talking to themselves at the Globe.

Boston.com lays off 12 staffers

Boston Globe Media Partners LLC on Tuesday laid off a dozen writers and producers at Boston.com, roughly one-sixth of the website’s staff. Globe Media chief executive Mike Sheehan said the reduction is part of a broader strategy for the site that will take shape over two to three months, though he declined to provide details. The company has sought Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 1.15.46 PMover the past two years to establish Boston.com, previously the online home of Boston Globe newspaper content, as a semi-autonomous news and entertainment site with its own identity. BostonGlobe.com, with a metered paywall, now hosts all stories and photos from the newspaper. “It’s an evolution,” Sheehan said. “One of the smartest things that was ever done at the Globe was separating BostonGlobe.com from Boston.com — taking Globe content off the Boston.com site and then building a very robust digital subscriber base that’s now third in the country for daily newspapers, behind The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.” The layoffs came a day after editor Tim Molloy said he would step down and followed last week’s announcement that general manager Corey Gottlieb was leaving to join the Boston-based fantasy sports company DraftKings Inc. Gottlieb and his successor, Eleanor Cleverly, said the downsizing is “designed to put Boston.com in a stronger and more sustainable position for growth.” They added that “we would be remiss to overlook the fact that this was also a people decision, one that affects the lives of many who have worked tirelessly to support our operation. That item – tucked into the Talking Points column in the print edition – is buried like Jimmy Hoffa on the website.

 

Regardless, we’re still left wondering whether the Globe wouldn’t talk to the Herald’s Owen Boss, or if they missed connections, or . . . something else.

Who Hates the Yankees More: The Globe or The Herald?

As a Made Yankee Fan in Boston, the hardreading staff is entirely gobsmacked by the Chernobylesque meltdown of the Bronx Bummers in the ALCS.

The locals here in Boston – and the local dailies – are lovin’ it, of course. As well they should.

But which paper loves it more?

The Boston Globe throws this high hard one on page 3 of the Sports section:

Tigers complete sweep of Yankees

DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers didn’t simply sweep the New York Yankees out of baseball’s postseason on Thursday; they embarrassed them in every way one team can another.

An 8-1 victory in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series gave the Tigers their first pennant since 2006 and completed a most thorough rout of the Yankees.

The Tigers never trailed in the series, outscoring the Yankees, 19-6. They were the fifth team in history to sweep a best-of-seven series without trailing in any game. The Red Sox were the last team to do it, crushing the Cardinals in the 2004 World Series.

“If someone told me we would sweep the Yankees in this series, I would have told them they were crazy,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Us too. But the Tigers did, much to the delight of the Boston Herald, which devotes its back page to the the Pinstrikes’ plunge.

NY faces many questions in offseason

DETROIT — In the span of one month, the 2011 Red Sox [team stats] mutated from World Series contenders into a team that choked on everything except its fried chicken.

The fall of the 2012 Yankees took only five days.

And what happens next figures to be fascinating.

The Red Sox learned the hard way that their rapid demise was rooted in more than merely one horrendous month. After taking over for Theo Epstein, general manager Ben Cherington only minimally tweaked the roster, and 93 losses later, the Sox suffered their worst season in 47 years.

So, although the Yankees won 95 games and the AL East title, the events of the past week have made it abundantly clear that GM Brian Cashman has nearly as much work to do this offseason as Cherington. The Yanks may have finished 26 games better than the Red Sox, but it somehow feels like they’re almost as far from winning another World Series.

And just for good measure, the Herald threw this into the mix:

Yankees lose their identity, lose their way

DETROIT — The growing chants of ‘sweep, sweep, sweep,’ cascaded from the rafters, an upper deck-to-dugout reminder of just how stunningly far and fast this Yankee season crashed to its end. This team didn’t just get swept out of the American League Championship Series by the 8-1 beating the Tigers put on them Thursday in Detroit; they were stripped bare of their pride, outclassed to the point that they couldn’t even take a lead for one of the 39 innings they played.

The home crowd bubbled with excitement as the Yankees took their final, feeble ninth-inning swings, and unleashed its full euphoria when Jayson Nix’s pop-up landed with the final out in Prince Fielder’s glove. But while Detroit’s door to delirium opened, a different one slammed shut on the Yankees. Devastated and disappointed, distracted and defeated, they walked off Comerica Park’s field as a hollowed out shell of the group that barely a week before, had willed its gritty, gutty self to a decisive Game 5 ALDS win over Baltimore.

Hard to argue with that. And hard to deny that the New York Post just might hate the Yankees even more than the Boston dailies do.

As for the hardcringing staff, we believe the only clutch performance by a Yankee was Joe Girardi’s benching of Alex “No Connection” Rodriguez. If there’s one good thing that comes out of this dismal postseason, it might be that Mr. September comes off the Yankee roster.

Globe Cries ‘Uncle’, Goes Back to Old Distributor

Rule #1: Don’t trust anything Boston Globe executives say these days.

Exhibit A: Here’s what Globe CEO Mike Sheehan said on WGBH’s Greater Boston Monday night:

Mike Sheehan: Part of those options we’re considering are dividing up those [undelivered] areas and bringing in some other distributors to help and getting this solved very very fast.

Jim Braude: You couldn’t undo this and just go back to the prior company?

MS: No – no, ACI is doing a very good job in certain geographies.

 

Then again, there’s this in today’s lately local broadsheet:

Globe splits deliveries between two companies

After more than a week of confounding problems getting newspapers to subscribers, The Boston Globe has turned to its former distribution partner to handle about half of its home deliveries across the region, Globe chief executive officer Mike Sheehan said on Tuesday.

The deal with Publishers Circulation Fulfillment Inc. follows an unexpectedly difficult rollout for the Globe’s new distribution firm, ACI Media Group Inc., which left tens of thousands of newspapers undelivered in its first week after taking over distribution within the Boston region on Dec. 28.

 

So, to recap: The Globe tore the sheets with former distributor Publishers Circulation Fulfillment in order to hook up with new squeeze (the drivers) ACI Media, but now the Globe and PCF are friends with benefits.

Not to get technical about it, but Mike Sheehan seems to be telling the truth a little bit at a time.

Rule #2: Don’t expect the Boston Herald to tell you anything about the Globe delivery meltdown.

Once again, the fraidy local tabloid is a day late, dolor short. Ignoring a major malfunction by your crosstown rival is not just bad journalism, it’s bad business. But at least they’re consistent.

Rule #3: Don’t expect the Globe’s publisher to stand the gaffe.

The Globe’s responsibility to this community is to bring it the news. I would like to share some news now about why we have failed to meet this objective for many readers over the past 10 days, how we are working to fix the problems, and a bit about the root causes.

First, I want to personally apologize to every Boston Globe subscriber who has been inconvenienced. We recognize that you depend on us, and that we’ve let you down. We’re working around the clock on a variety of fronts to solve this. To that end, I also want to thank everyone at the Globe who pitched in to get some 20,000 Sunday papers delivered last weekend.

Getting a daily newspaper to your front door is a complicated exercise in logistics .  . .

Helpful hint: Wear asbestos glove while reading the comments.

Rule the Last: When the paper you own goes Chernobyl, don’t turtle for 10 days, then tell us how tough your job is. It’s just not manly.
