Sunday Boston Herald at Super (Bowl) DisADvantage

One week after the stunning Super Bowl win by the New England Patriots, the Boston Globe has published its obligatory Special Commemorative Section.

The 26-page celebration of all things Pats is chockablock with advertising such as this ad from Marty Walsh & the People of Boston, which features so many logos you’d think Walsh was Mayor of NASCAR.

All told, there are five full-page ads in the section (everyone from Bob’s Discount Furniture to TAG Heuer) and ten half-page ads (ranging from Tostitos to Rutgers Football). An adstravaganza, in other words.

Crosstown at the Boston Herald, meanwhile, there’s no special section, just the regular Sunday Sports.

The not-so-special section features just four Pats-related ads, starting with this must-have.

There are also ads for a New England Patriots Super Bowl LI Commemorative Fan Ring, the New England Patriots Super Bowl 51 Champions Legacy Decanter Set, and the First-Ever Tom Brady Gold Dollar.

Collect them all! Trade them with your friends!

And feel just a little bad for the thirsty local tabloid.

Verizon Workers at a DisADvantage in Union Dustup

As the hardreading staff has previously noted, telecom giant Verizon has been wallpapering the Boston Globe (but not the Boston Herald) with this full-page ad questioning why union workers are striking over cuts in healthcare and pension benefits.

Yesterday, Verizon doubled down with two ads in the $tately local broadsheet: The one above, and this one.

And the response from the striking Communications Workers of America/International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers?

Nada.

Same today: Verizon two ads, workers none.

Dumb.


Mass. Mayors Put Boston Herald at DisADvantage

As the hardreading staff has repeatedly pointed out, the Boston Herald rarely gets any love from groups or individuals running full-page advocacy or tribute ads, virtually all of which wind up exclusively in the Boston Globe.

Ad sponsor AJC Boston apparently doesn’t believe that Herald readers are interested in 57 municipal leaders “[taking] a stand and [speaking] out against an ancient hatred that once again is raging in places around the globe.”

So once again the thirsty local tabloid goes without.

Huh.


Boston Herald at a Medical DisADvantage

As you splendid readers no doubt already know, Massachusetts General Hospital has topped this year’s U.S. News and World Report rankings after being relegated to second place for the past two years.

Now that Mass General has been restored to its former glory, it’s all over but the touting. Joining in the celebration is this full-page ad in today’s Boston Globe.

Crosstown at the Boston Herald, no love from the Kraft Family. But the Herald did have this quarter-page ad exclusive.

Herald Again at a DisAdvantage (CVS Smokes-Free Edition)

The Boston Herald is a three-time loser in the advertising department today. Once again, the Boston Globe scoops up all the good ads, starting with this one from the new nonsmoking CVS.

The hardsquinting staff gets why Neiman’s wouldn’t run that – or any – ad in the Herald. But CVS? What – only smokers read the Herald?

Regardless, this Puffs ad doesn’t soften the blow any either.

For Once, Boston Globe at a DisADvantage

As the hard reading staff has noted on numerous occasions, it’s normally the Boston Herald that gets shortchanged in the full-page-ad department, especially in terms of advocacy ads.

But not today.

The outfit that funded the ad, Alzheimer’s Impact Movement, describes itself as “a nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization working in strategic partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association to make Alzheimer’s disease a national priority.”

And Ed Markey? He’s co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease. So good idea to suck up to him, although not sure why the Herald is the place to do it.

Regardless, here’s another thing today’s Herald has that the Globe doesn’t: coverage of Chet Curtis’s wake yesterday.

Finally, the Herald has also cornered the market on Romney Redux reporting, with the normally level-headed Kimberly Atkins speculating that two-time presidential loser Mitt Romney might go for the hat trick.

Oy.

So the feisty local tabloid goes two-for-three today. Better than average, yes?

Herald Once Again DisADvantaged

Why do advertisers keep snubbing Boston Herald readers?

Today this open letter to the Boston Bruins and the City of Boston appeared in the Boston Globe.

Here’s the text of the letter, which is signed by Rocky Wirtz, Chairman of the Wirtz Corporation and Owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Blackhawks President & CEO John McDonough:

Hockey is a tough game. As impressed as we were by the strength, talent, and competitive spirit of the Boston Bruins on the ice, we were deeply touched by what happened off the ice. Rarely have we experienced the hospitality you afforded us throughout the playoff series between two incredibly gifted teams.

On behalf of the Chicago Blackhawks organization and the entire Wirtz Corporation, we want to personally express our heartfelt appreciation to your city, the Bruins organization, and especially the citizens of Boston for the remarkable welcome you showed our team and the many Chicagoans who visited.

From Boston’s political leadership to every member of the Bruins organization; from the players to the people on the streets, you demonstrated respect, good sportsmanship, and a genuine love for the great game of hockey.

Like the rest of the world, Chicagoans have been reminded in recent days of Boston’s strength. Please know we tip our hat to your city’s big heart and gracious spirit. You lead by example and have set the bar very high for others to follow.

 

So – all those hockey fans/readers of the feisty local tabloid got the same message, eh?

Nope. The message they got was, well, nuthin’. You get nuthin’.

This is the second time this week Herald readers got that message. As the hardreading staff noted, this memorial ad for Lt. Stephen F. Minehan, the Boston firefighter who died in a Charlestown warehouse blaze 19 years ago – this ad ran twice in Monday’s Globe, and no times in the Herald.

We asked the folks at Pyramid Hotel Group, which owns that Marriott at Tudor Wharf, why it ran twice in the Globe but not in the Herald. No one addressed the latter part, but regarding the double play in the Globe one executive said, “It wasn’t intentional.” So the Globe made a mistake? “We’ll have to wait and see when the bill comes in. But I don’t think it was on purpose.”

An advertising executive at the Globe failed to answer our calls. We’re not holding our breath.


Super Bowl CongrADulations Spike Boston Herald

In the wake of the New England Patriots’ victory in Stupor Bowl LIII, yesterday’s editions of the Boston dailies marked Celebration Day for the six-time champions.

Begin with the Boston Globe, where the Kraft Family bought page 3 of the Score section.

 

 

From there the congradulations took an oddly retail turn, starting with this sort of oblique Hood full page.

 

 

Next up was this 7-Eleven full page ad offering some Hangover Relief Specials.

And then the back page of Score, brought to you by Pepsi, the Official Soft Drink of the New England Patriots and Super Bowl LIII.

 

 

Yes, that is the Chris Hogan of six targets, zero receptions, and zero yardage in the Big Game. But why get technical about it.

Finally, the A section of the Globe featured this full-page shoutout from Bank of America.

 

 

Of all the ads above, only that last one ran in the Boston Herald.

Today it’s a different story – it’s Tchotchke Day in the local dailies! Here’s a sample of the Patsabilia you can find in today’s Globe.

 

 

And here’s what the Herald is offering.

 

 

Not for nothing, but the hardreading staff gravitates toward the Levitating Football.

One final, poignant note: The thirsty local tabloid, after being passed over by so many advertisers yesterday, was finally reduced to running a congratulatory ad from . . . “the entire staff at the Boston Herald.”

 

 

That’s just, well, sad.
