Donald Trump – the GOP’s one-man clown car – had a good weekend, as this piece from New York’s Daily Intelligencer notes.

Donald Trump, who is ahead or tied for the lead in three recent polls tracking GOP presidential candidates, had a very busy weekend. At campaign events Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Phoenix, Arizona, Trump delivered separate but equally rambling speeches that touched upon everything from legitimate national issues to Trump’s self-assessed intelligence to a joke about ISIS trying to compete with him by building a hotel in Iraq. Said Trump, who seemed to be improvising the speeches, “You know I don’t use TelePrompTers like the president — I speak from the heart.”

 

Right – a heart that’s filled with the buttermilk of human kindness.

The Donald adds something vital to ’16 prez race

Admit it, if he walked away from the presidential race this morning there is something about Donald Trump you would miss.

Perhaps not his politics.

Maybe not his temperament.

And certainly not his hubris.

Yet, there’s something refreshing about a candidate who doesn’t measure every word, who doesn’t wait to be told by parasitic handlers what his or her positions ought to be, and who doesn’t curry favor by pretending to embrace what special interests want to hear.

 

In her Lone Republican column today, Holly Robichaud sounds a similar note:

At a time when Republican candidates should be talking about the economy, the national debt, cyber-security and so much more, PC police have hijacked the 2016 Republican presidential primary.

They are having a collective hissy fit over Donald Trump’s candidacy and his comments about illegal immigrants. They have falsely accused him of being a racist for having the courage to speak out against 
illegal immigrants and the results of porous borders.

When Trump would not retract his statements, the media turned their focus on other GOP contenders, asking them to respond to the Donald’s comments. Now there is a push to kick Trump out of the debates.

As if it is dangerous to have free speech on the stage!

 

Free-of-common-decency speech, that is.

The Kochheads are here! Defenders of conservative billionaire David Koch are going after the liberal activists going after Koch for giving a reported $18.6 to local public broadcaster WGBH over the past three decades.

From today’s Boston Herald:

David KochKoch foes blasted for ‘politicizing’ public TV

Environmentalists seeking to oust conservative billionaire David Koch from WGBH’s board of trustees came under fire yesterday from media watchdogs who blasted the activists for “politicizing” public broadcasting.

“If the shoe were on the other foot, I think you would have outrage in a lot of places, that someone is trying to throw somebody off a board over their personal politics,” said Bob Lichter, president of the nonpartisan Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University.

“My God, he’s supporting NOVA,” Lichter added of the PBS science program. “If you can get a climate change skeptic to give money to NOVA, I wouldn’t try to change that . . .

 

The environmental activists have gathered 70,000 signatures that they’ll try to present to WGBH trustees on Wednesday. One PBS critic, despite wanting to defund public broadcasting, calls the protest “political bullying.”

WGBH is essentially ignoring the protesters.

WGBH officials and Koch’s reps have brushed off charges that he wields influence in program decision-making. His company said he’s given $10 million to NOVA alone, and that he has no plans to step down in the face of the uproar around the Brighton studios.

 

Also ignoring the protesters: The Boston Globe.  Our stately local broadsheet has yet to mention the Koch rumpus, although the Globeniks will undoubtedly cover any protest next week.

Globe Ignores Dan Conley’s ‘Don’t Buy Boston’ Ad Production

Now that the Bay State’s umpteenth U.S. Senate special election is done, the Boston news media can turn their attention to the first real mayoral race we’ve had here in Mayberry since 1993.

From Tuesday’s Boston Globe:

Conley set to launch television ads

Suffolk DA’s are 1st of Hub mayor’s race

Boston mayoral candidate Daniel F. Conley, leveraging his significant fund-raising advantage over 11 opponents, will launch the first television advertising campaign of the race Tuesday, part of a sustained blitz that will continue through the Sept. 24 preliminary election.

Conley’s campaign has paid for five ads, at least four of which will begin running Tuesday on local and cable television stations. The Conley campaign declined to say how much it is spending on the ad campaign, making it difficult to determine the frequency and prominence of the ads.

The Suffolk district attorney’s ads will be quickly followed Thursday by a commercial buy from Felix G. Arroyo. The first ad from the Latino city councilor will be in Spanish and will air only on Spanish-language media.

 

And then there’s this:

The ads were produced by Joe Slade White and Co., a media strategy firm that has worked on campaigns with other Democrats, including Joe Biden when he was running for reelection to the US Senate from Delaware. Conley’s campaign has paid the company $23,000 for its work, according to campaign expenditures filed with the Massachusetts Office of Campaign & Political Finance.

 

First of all, $23,000 for producing five ads? Those guys need management.

Second of all, Joe Slade White and Co. is carpetbagging in this race.

The air war in the mayor’s race has officially begun as Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley launches a series of TV ads today and City Councilor Felix G. 
Arroyo follows later this week with what may be the first Spanish-language-only ads in a Hub mayoral race.

Conley’s campaign is launching five new ads to begin airing on cable and local TV today. In one spot, created by a Portland, Ore., production company, he talks about “cracking down on illegal guns” and how he created a Suffolk County gun court that has a 90 percent conviction rate. Other ads focus on education and the city’s innovation economy.

 

(The web version of the piece calls it a “Buffalo, New York, production company” – no correction appended. The Herald doesn’t do corrections.)

Buffalo – Portland, Ore. (not even Maine?) – whatever. The ads were not produced in Boston.

Surprisingly, neither local daily made a big deal of it.

But the hardreading staff is.
