Boston Dailies Split on Trump-Kraft Bromance

December 24, 2017

From our Tear the Sheets desk

There seems to be some confusion at the local dailies about what exactly transpired between White House squatter Donald Trump (R-Donald Trump) and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft (R-NFL) over the GOP tax bill passed the other day.

According to yesterday’s Boston Herald Billionaire Bromance piece, Trump claimed that Kraft “based on this tax bill he just wanted to let me know that he’s going to buy a big plant in the great state of North Carolina and he’s going to build a tremendous paper mill there or paper products plant.”

But the Boston Globe’s Jon Chesto had a different take.

Unfortunately, the Kraft Group offered little clarity on the matter. A spokesman confirmed that Kraft and Trump spoke, and that Kraft believes the bill will spur corporate America to make significant capital investments.

But is a Kraft affiliate building another one in the Tar Heel State? The Kraft spokesman wouldn’t say. A spokesman for that state’s economic development office was similarly elusive.

As is just about everything Donald Trump has ever said.

Boston Globe’s NFL/CTE Last Graf Is Herald Headline

June 3, 2016

From our One Town, Two Different Worlds desk

The local dailies have duly noted this week’s Boston University School of Medicine shindig to kick off a seven-year, $16 million study called DIAGNOSE CTE, which will examine the relationship of head injuries to the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

That, of course, is a subject the National Football League has a $12 billion a year interest in.

Interestingly, that interest got very different play in yesterday’s local papers.

Kay Lazar’s Boston Globe Metro Page One piece:

Study to test brain damage in living

Why do some athletes who suffer repeated head injuries develop a devastating brain disease, while others seem immune? And can this degenerative disease be treated or even prevented?

A team of scientists from across the country gathered Wednesday at Boston University School of Medicine to launch a pioneering study aimed at detecting chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a disease that silently destroys the minds of athletes after years of repetitive blows to the head. But this time, unlike so much of the research preceding it, the studies will be conducted in people who are alive.

The NFL connection was relegated to the story’s final graf.

[A] congressional committee last week issued a scathing report saying it found evidence top NFL officials improperly tried to influence the selection of scientists for government-funded research on CTE. That interference, the report found, concerned the grant eventually awarded to the team led by BU’s [Robert] Stern.

But the National Finagling League’s interference was headline material in Lindsay Kalter’s Boston Herald report.

Doc: we won’t fumble

Despite NFL cries, CTE project rolls on

Boston University neuroscientist Dr. Robert Stern said his groundbreaking study on head trauma, which was Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 12.28.45 AMofficially launched yesterday, will not be sullied by the long-brewing controversy over the NFL’s alleged attempts to strip him of his funding.

“I’m just so unbelievably excited to get this science moving right now,” Stern told the Herald. “This is the time to do this science.”

He added, “We’re now going to move forward.”

As will the Boston dailies, each on its own track.

A Bill Beli-check on Mr. Hoodie Coverage

July 30, 2015

Tell us again how long New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has been stonewalling the press?

Oh, right – all 15 years he’s been here.

Yesterday’s press conference in the wake of the latest Act of Goodell was, of course, no exception.

Didn’t mince words? Not to get technical about it, but that’s all Belichick does.

Crosstown at the Boston Herald, Steve Buckley gave a representative sample of Mr. Hoodie’s evasive maneuvers.

Media member: “Do you believe Tom Brady when he says that neither he nor anyone in the Patriots organization did anything wrong?”

Belichick: “We start training camp today. We’ll get ready for the 2015 season starting today.”

Media member: “Is there something flawed about the system here in the organization that you keep ending up in these cheating controversies? Can you explain why?”

Belichick: “It’s already been addressed.”

Media member: “Could you elaborate a little?”

Belichick: “No.”

Media member: “Why not?”

Belichick: “Because it’s already been addressed.”

And Herald columnist Karen Guregian gave the Globe a bit of an English lesson.

Robert Kraft’s on-again, off-again war with Roger Goodell and the NFL is back on . . .

There was no mincing words. Kraft believes he got screwed when he put his reputation on the line with Patriots fans by standing down and choosing not to fight the league’s unprecedented punishment of his team.
