Boston Herald’s Cohen Crazy Re: Climate Change

Only in the ditzy local tabloid could a character like Adriana Cohen have a regular column. But we’ll get back to that in a minute.

Glut of climate misinformation chilling

Is a thermometer a climate denier?

It must be because according to global-warming alarmists, the Earth is heating up, which will undoubtedly cause environmental “Armageddon.”

They demand our government (aka taxpayers) spend billions fighting climate change all while politicians pass job-killing regulations in the process.

 

And what’s her evidence? “My car thermometer registered negative 3 degrees last week! Pipes burst in homes and heating bills soared as the dreaded ‘polar vortex’ swooped down from the Arctic.”

Really. There’s ill-informed, and then there’s resolutely ignorant.

Hark! The Herald! (Radio Daze Edition)

The flighty local tabloid is once again rearranging the deck chairs on Boston Herald Radio, an exercise it devotes all of page 4 to trumpeting today.

Morning ‘Drive’ time talk will never be the same again

At 7 a.m. tomorrow, “Boston Herald Drive” hits the air on WMEX 1510 AM, bringing local morning news and talk to radio for the first time in years.

Hosts Adriana Cohen and Tom Shattuck, backed up by the Herald newsroom, will cover all the breaking news of the day ­— and provide instant analysis and interviews.

 

Good for you guys. But here’s the part where the Herald drives off the rhetorical cliff:

“We’ve always been straight with our audience,” said Shattuck, executive producer of Boston Herald Radio. “This is the city of Jerry Williams, Gene Burns and David Brudnoy. We are lucky enough now to have an opportunity to be custodians of those same airwaves and we will do it humbly, tirelessly and with the utmost respect for the listener.”

 

C’mon, Heraldniks. Williams, Burns and Brudnoy? Seriously? They were real forces in the life of the city, the politics of the city, the image of the city. Boston Herald Radio is like someone’s hobby. Get a grip.

The Yin and Yang of the Globe and Herald (EBOLA/ebola Edition II)

Once again the Boston Herald has a case of the high-sterics in dealing with the Ebola we-don’t-know-what. Page One of today’s fraidy local tabloid:

Inside the Herald devotes three full pages to its Chicken Little act. Here’s a Whit(e)man’s Sampler of the alarums on the Herald homepage at post time.

Especially risible is the column by Adriana Cohen, who seems to be suggesting that America construct a Dome of Solitude to make the world go away.

The Yin and Yang of the Globe and Herald (Hillary’$ World Edition)

When the Hillary Clinton Rock Star Diva story broke yesterday, the hardreading staff knew it would be mother’s milk to the feisty local tabloid. And today’s Boston Herald did not disappoint.

Inside, readers were treated to two Whack-a-Hill columns  –  one from Kimberly Atkins, the other from the inexplicable Adriana Cohen.

(Note the rare double Little Green Number that Clinton rates.)

Crosstown, today’s Boston Globe said nothing about Queen Hillary, not even in Tom Keane’s Hillary is inevitable no longer op-ed. (The paper does have a News Brief: Clinton to attend key Iowa fundraiser. No mention of how she’ll get to Indianoloa.)

In a Weekly Standard piece this week (Hillary Clinton’s Reputation), Jay Cost says “it’s better than you think” and reminds us that “what matters in the Beltway does not necessarily play in Peoria.”

That goes the other way around, too. Case in point: Queen Hillary didn’t make today’s New York Times, either. But stay tuned – Maureen Dowd is up tomorrow.

Survivor rips ‘Meet the Press’

The gutsy dancer who lost part of her left leg in the marathon bombings accused “Meet the Press” late yesterday of being “dishonorable” for naming the accused terrorists during a local taping of the Sunday show after she was led to believe they wouldn’t.

Adrianne Haslet-Davis — one of the first survivors of the Boylston Street blasts to go public last year when she vowed “I’ll dance again” Boston Marathon Victim Hasletin a front-page Herald story — said she was in tears when she walked out on the taping of tomorrow’s “Meet the Press” at the Hyatt Boston Harbor hotel.

“Your decision to back out on that promise you made and the horrific way you brought that decision to my attention just minutes prior to taping was not only a cowardice move but a dishonorable one as well,” Haslet-Davis posted on her website, adriannehaslet-davis.com about the names being used.

 

(Herald columnist Adriana Cohen was in high dudgeon as well, but that’s her default position.)

New Boston Herald Columnist: ‘No Conflict of Interest’

As the hardreading staff wrote late last week, new Boston Herald columnist/Boston Herald Radio host Adriana Cohen came to the job(s) with an Picture 1entangling alliance: She serves on the Finance Committee of Two-Time Charlie Baker’s GOP gubernatorial campaign. We contacted her on Friday to ask if she would be leaving that position now that she works for the feisty local tabloid.

“That’s up in the air right now,” she told us.

So we waited a decent interval and tried again. And here’s what she replied today:

There is no conflict of interest. I’m a radio host and opinion writer, not a reporter.

 

That’s no surprise at a news organization that allows other columnists to appear at public fundraising events for Republican candidates (c’mon down, Howie Carr and Michael Graham!).

But it’s nothing a legitimate news organization would allow.

Conflict of Interest for New Herald Columnist?

After the hardreading staff wrote about the Boston Herald’s new columnist/radio co-host Adriana Cohen earlier this week, a sharp-eyed commenter sent us this:

The Herald promo made her sound like Mary McGrory, but I’ve never heard of her. Then I clicked on her own bio and it says she’s a fundraiser for Scott Brown and sits on Charlie Baker’s finance committee.

Is that current information, or did she have to step down from that post once she got the column?

 

Well, it’s certainly current on Cohen’s website (although the Scott Brown fundraising seems to be in the past tense).

Hark! The Herald! (‘Trending Now’ Edition)

They keep rolling the rock up the hill at the feisty local tabloid. Here’s their latest addition to Boston Herald Radio: the Trending Now webstream featuring political columnist Joe Battenfeld and commentator Adriana Cohen.

From the newsverpromo:

“When the mics go hot on ‘Trending Now,’ listeners will be treated to the single-most-fortified three hours of news and talk in Boston and probably the country,” said Boston Herald Radio Executive Producer Tom Shattuck.

 

The hardreading staff has no idea what “fortified” news and talk is, but we’re guessing it involves artificial ingredients.

Beyond that,  Cohen also got her own column today, straight off some journalistic Welcome Wagon.

Look who’s slamming the middle class

ADP_7535.JPGPresident Obama has misled the American people. He promised that if you liked your doctor and health plan, you could keep them. To date, 5 million Americans have received policy cancellations. Many in the middle class are being forced into new plans at a much higher cost.

Wait a sec! Didn’t President Obama and our own U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren campaign on the platform they were the party that protects the middle class? Weren’t they the ones who lambasted the GOP for pushing government policies that “hammered” the middle class?

Well my question for voters is, who’s getting hammered now?

It’s the middle class.

 

Not a helluva lot new there, eh? But a boffo debut in terms of newspaper real estate.

By contrast, today’s Boston Globe introduced TV critic Matthew Gilbert’s new column Bookish with this at the bottom of Page One:

Now if the Globe would just give Gilbert his own show on RadioBDC, we’d have a fair fight on our hands.
