Ads ‘n’ Ends From the Boston Dailies (Remembering Michael Ryan Kennedy Edition)

There’s lots of interesting advertising material in today’s local dailies, starting with the Boston Globe’s Capital section. Usually the papers’s weekly political playground capitalizes on its cherce readership with a bundle of full-page ads, but in today’s edition what’s more interesting are the pieces about advertising.

First up: Noah Guiney’s scorecard on some of the latest New England campaign ads. Representative sample:

Charlie Baker, Martha Coakley, Seth Moulton, and Jeanne Shaheen also get the red-pen treatment.

Getting the graphic treatment are Political ads that aired most often (in two parts for legibility – sorry, no link).

Crosstown at the Boston Herald, it’s today’s ads themselves that are most noteworthy, starting with this one for heavy Lyfters.

That’s appeared before in the Herald, but not (to our knowledge) in the Globe.

Here’s another one that we haven’t seen in the stately local broadsheet.

By far the most noteworthy ad in today’s Herald is this:

Brown Out, The Great Mentioner In

Now that former Sen. Scott Brown (R-$$$) has dropped out of the running for the upcoming special election for U.S. Senate, the local dailies are putting forth very – wait for it – different lists of potential fill-ins.

The Boston Globe wins the coveted Ya Think? award with this headline on its lead editorial:

Mass. Republicans should move to fill void left by Brown

 

In the Globe’s news section, the Great Mentioner rounds up the usual suspects:

The GOP is suddenly grasping for alternatives, hoping to press into service known figures such as former governor William F. Weld, former lieutenant governor Kerry Healey, or Richard R. Tisei, the former state Senate minority leader.

 

But then the GM tosses in a couple of unusual suspects:

State Representative Daniel Winslow, a Norfolk Republican, said he will also take the next few days to consider a potential run. Gabriel E. Gomez, a wealthy businessman and a former Navy SEAL and fighter pilot from Cohasset, said he is very likely to get into the race.

 

Crosstown at the Herald, meanwhile, they’re living in an entirely different universe, as today’s Page One attests (via The Newseum’s Today’s Front Pages):

That inset at the lower right refers to Brown’s first announcing his decision in a text message (“U r the first to know I am not running”) to Herald columnist Howie Carr. The rest of the front page? Yikes.

But the Herald goes all in with a two-page spread:

Slamming/Not Slamming the Mass. Democratic Party Edition

Yesterday’s local papers nicely illustrated the yin and yang of the 10th Congressional district election coverage.

From the copyediting challenged Boston Globe:

Democrats launch new attack on Tisei

Website part of new strategy

Democrats on ramped up Wednesday their efforts to turn the tables on Republican Richard R. Tisei, whose challenge to US Representative John F. Tierney has been boosted by the legal troubles of Tierney’s family.

State party officials announced a two-pronged effort to allege that “Tisei personally benefited by at least $30,000 dollars from the sale of a house that was among the assets his parents were alleged in court to be hiding from parties they damaged.”

The allegations — denied by Tisei, a Wakefield realtor who served in the state Senate — were recently reported in the Boston Phoenix.

The Democratic Party put up a website, http://www.TiseiFacts.com, and state party chairman John Walsh held a conference call with reporters.

Pretty straightforward, yeah?

Not if you read the Boston Herald, mister.

Mudslinging Dems sink to an all-time low

Smearing someone’s family is about as low as it gets in politics, but Massachusetts Democrats are setting a new standard in sliminess.

The party’s new website targeting Republican congressional candidate Richard Tisei claims to show his family’s “web of fraud and deceit,” but all it really shows is how dirty the Democrats are willing to get to win an election.

The joys of living in a two-daily town, yes?
