Boston Dailies Take Turns Beating One Another

. . . on the dopey Chandler Jones story, that is.

Yesterday it was all Boston Herald, starting with this Erin Smith/Laurel Sweet story on page two.

Details of Chandler Jones’ ER visit remain murky

Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones was rushed to Norwood Hospital Sunday morning after he showed up at the Foxboro Police Department with a medical Screen Shot 2016-01-14 at 1.11.19 PMemergency, police dispatch records show.

But police officials won’t say what the emergency was and the police chief confirmed information was deleted from dispatch records before they were released to the Herald yesterday.

Dispatch records show Jones arrived at the police station at 7:42 a.m. Sunday and was evaluated by fire and EMS officials before being transported to Norwood Hospital just after 8 a.m.

 

Regardless, Foxboro police Chief 
Edward T. O’Leary did an end run around the Herald’s questions, “[denying] his department and officers had any dealing with Jones over the weekend and 
[adding] the only time he’d ever seen Jones was being interviewed on television.”

That proved to be entirely false. But why get technical about it.

Crosstown, the Boston Globe ate the firsty local tabloid’s dust, running a story on D5 that mentioned the Herald six times in 11 paragraphs.

But today the tables were turned.The Morrissey Boulevardiers have this Jim McBride/Christopher Gasper piece on D1.

FOXBOROUGH — Chandler Jones had a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana leading to his admittance to Norwood Hospital Sunday, a source familiar with the situation told the Globe Wednesday.

The source said Jones lives near the Foxborough police station and walked there to seek help after he had the reaction.

 

Crosstown the other way, the Fargo Street Gang has a solid follow-up today, but not all the details.

Dispatch records show a Foxboro officer also secured Jones’ residence during the Sunday incident.

“The front door’s open,” the officer says when he arrives at Jones’ home, which is about a block from the station, and later reports: “Yeah, I got his keys off the kitchen table. I was able to lock the front door. If you want to just pass along to the fire he was definitely involved in Class D — Delta — before this happened, just so they know.”

Delta is a police call sign to denote the letter D, while Class D is a category of controlled substances under the state’s drug laws, according to a law enforcement source. Class D drugs include marijuana and some prescription drugs, which can be legal.

 

So there’s more difference between the Boston dailies than how they spell Foxboro(ugh). That’s just swell.


What If They Held an Iran-Deal Protest and No News Media Came?

As you splendid readers know, the headscratching staff has been asking for the past several days, Who Ran This Anti-Iran Ad in Friday’s Boston Herald?

We contacted WRKO radio host Jeff Kuhner, State Rep. Shaunna O’Connell, and Charles Jacobs’s Americans for Peace and Tolerance to find out, but none of them got back to us.

So we moseyed down to the State House yesterday around noon to investigate the Potemkinish Ad Hoc Committee Against Funding of Iranian Terror.

Almost immediately we encountered Rep. O’Connell, who told us she didn’t know who had paid for the Herald ad, and in fact hadn’t even seen it.

Luckily, we then ran into publishing bunny Russel Pergament (umpteen media startups – and counting), who told us that Charles Jacobs had paid for the ad “with contributions.”

Okay then. Now we know.

Meanwhile, Jeff Kuhner finally showed up 20 minutes late and, before leading the crowd in a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, noted that when 50 #BlackLivesMatter protestors rallied recently in Boston, “all the media elites showed up.”

His point was, no media – elite or otherwise (except for the hardreading staff) – showed up at yesterday’s protest.

[Editor’s Note: This post is being typed ’round midnight on Sunday, so we’ll check this morning for any news reports.]

But – at least from Kuhner’s Twitter feed – the protest didn’t exactly ignite a firestorm on social media.

Anti-Iran Group Dodges Two Daily Town Investigation!

Well, that might be a bit overstated. Not to get technical about it.

But still . . .

Yesterday the hardreading staff noted this full-page ad in the Boston Herald.

We, of course, were curious about the players in this anti-Iran-deal groundswell, so we emailed Jeff Kuhner, placed a call to Rep. O’Connell, and reached out to Charles Jacob on APT’s Facebook page.

What did we get back?

Bubkes.

To be fair, it was Friday afternoon before the penultimate summer weekend, but hey – everyone’s wired 24/7, right?

Anyway, two addenda:

1) APT is the Boston-based pro-Israel, anti-Muslim Americans for Peace & Tolerance. (We’ve undoubtedly pissed off both sides with that description.)

Who Ran the Iran Ad in Today’s Boston Herald?

As the hardreading staff has previously noted, it’s a rare day that the Boston Herald gets a full-page ad the Boston Globe hasn’t. But today’s one of ’em.

Firsty local tabloid, page 3:

But try to get any information on this ‘Ad Hoc Committee Against U.S. Funding of Iranian Terror’ outfit, and you get bubkes.

So we’re now trying to contact Jeff Kuhner or Shaunna O’Connell or Charles Jacobs to find out who paid for this ad and presumably is organizing Sunday’s rally. We might even try Alan Dershowitz.

EXTRA! Thirsty Local Tabloid Gets Ad Love!

As the hardreading staff noted yesterday, the Boston Herald continues to be the wallflower at the local advertising dance.

Except today.

Lo and behold, occupying the entirety of page 9 was this ad, paid for by some outfit called the Coalition to Lower Energy Costs.

Curious as always, we hied ourselves to the group’s website, which says this about the coalition:

The Coalition to Lower Energy Costs is a non-profit Massachusetts association of individual consumers, labor unions, larger energy consumers and institutions concerned about the threat to New England’s families and economy from skyrocketing natural gas and electric prices. The coalition advocates for the new infrastructure we need to give all of us access to an adequate natural gas supply and lower our energy cost. This will require substantial new pipeline capacity, including one new pipeline from western Massachusetts to Dracut.

 

Huh. We kind of assumed some natural gas companies might be involved. They could, of course, be those “institutions concerned about the threat to New England’s families and economy from skyrocketing natural gas and electric prices” the website mentions. The About Us page doesn’t say.

Pro-gas pipeline group makes regional push with new TV ad

Coalition to Lower Energy cost has ties to Kinder Morgan energy firm

MANCHESTER, N.H. —A group with ties to the proponents of the Northeast Energy Direct pipeline, proposed by the Kinder Morgan energy company, has begun advertising on WMUR and other television stations in New England.

The Coalition to Lower Energy Costs has purchased time to air an ad 30 times over two weeks on the New Hampshire’s largest television station at a cost of more than $70,000.

Anthony Buxton, a Maine-based attorney who is a leader of the coalition and also represents Kinder Morgan in a Maine Public Utilities Commission proceeding, said plans call for the ad to air for a total of about three weeks on WMUR. He said it will also air on another New Hampshire television station, as well as two Maine stations and “several stations in Boston,” at a total cost of “several hundred thousand dollars.”

So, mystery solved, yes? Well, no. Why run the print ad in the Herald but not the Boston Globe? Intrepid as ever, we’re sending an email to the coalition to ask.

Wanna know something else that’s strange? A different energy group – Nuclear Matters (you can read about them here) –  ran this full-page ad 0n A11 in today’s Globe.

Hark! The Herald! (Radio Daze Edition)

It’s been one year since the feisty local tabloid launched Boston Herald Radio, and the paper is celebrating the anniversary in its accustomed style.

Start, as usual, with Page One.

Inside, the firsty local tabloid devotes a full-page, Joe Battenfeld-bylined piece to the anniversary bash.

Our favorite part:

Herald Radio’s launch was named to the prestigious Frontier Fifty list of outstanding talk media webcasts in the nation by industry bible Talkers Magazine.

 

Which got the headscratching staff to wondering: How many talk media webcasts are there in the nation?

We couldn’t find the answer on the Googletron (we’re guessing it’s a lot), but we did locate BHR on the Frontier Fifty:

The firsty local tabloid is rightly proud of its Sigma Delta Chi Award for Deadline Reporting (Daily Circulation of 50,001-100,000) on the Boston Marathon tragedy, just as we’re sure the Boston Globe is for its First Place award for Deadline Reporting (Daily Circulation of 100,001+) on the Boston Marathon tragedy. The stately local broadsheet didn’t mention it in today’s edition, but we’ll check back tomorrow.

Meanwhile, kudos to both.

 


Forget Tabloid Format – Boston Herald Is Just Small

It’s awards season for newspapers right now, and Boston hit the dailies double in the latest journalism lovefest.

From the Boston Globe:

Nice, eh? Spread the love to WBUR and the Herald, even if the latter did catch a bit of an elbow:

Both the Globe and the Boston Herald took first place for deadline reporting on the Boston Marathon bombings. The Globe won in the category for newspapers with more than 100,000, while the Herald won for newspapers with daily circulation of more than 50,000 but less than 100,000.

 

And crosstown at the firsty local tabloid? Here’s how it played:
