Why Didn’t the Globe Names-Check Sacha Pfeiffer?

January 12, 2016

Apparently, a reporter/movie hero is not without publicity except in her own paper.

By now you most likely know that Boston Globe Spotlight reporter Sacha Pfeiffer was the Golden Globes plus one of actress Rachel McAdams, who played Pfeiffer in the movie. You certainly know it if you read Erica Corsano’s Social Studies column in today’s Boston Herald.

Where’s Sacha?

Buried on the Globe’s website.

Just for the record: Sacha looked very nice Sunday night.

Hey, Globeniks: What does it say when the hardreading staff has to step in to do justice?

Now the Spotlight Has Turned On ‘Spotlight’

November 23, 2015

It was bound to happen: First, there was the tremendous acclaim for Spotlight, the film about the Boston Globe’s dogged pursuit of pedophile priests and the Boston archdiocese that sheltered and enabled them.

Now come the complaints.

It started, to the best of our knowledge, with attorney Eric MacLeish in the November 10 Boston Globe Names column.

MacLeish objects to and lauds ‘Spotlight’

The news has been nearly all good for “Spotlight,” director Tom McCarthy’s movie about the Boston Globe investigation that revealed systemic coverup and sexual abuse of children by priests in the Boston Archdiocese. The film, which opened in Boston, New York, and Los Angeles on Friday, is getting rave reviews and is considered a front-runner 04182010_11macleish-7569377to win the Oscar for best picture. But not everyone thinks the movie gets the story right.

Boston attorney Eric MacLeish, who in the early 1990s represented hundreds of victims of sexual abuse by priests, objects to his portrayal in “Spotlight.” In a lengthy Facebook post, MacLeish, played by actor Billy Crudup in the movie, encourages people to see “Spotlight” but adds that “events involving my character are not only inaccurate but the opposite of what occurred.”

Namesnik Mark Shanahan adds, “Curiously, MacLeish hasn’t seen the movie and on Sunday told Walter Robinson, former editor of the Globe’s Spotlight team, that he doesn’t plan to see it any time soon.” MacLeish subsequently did some moonwalking on the subject, texting to the Globe that “[m]y character is inaccurately portrayed but the film is too important and too good to let this be a distraction.”

But the distractions keep coming. The redoubtable Kevin Cullen added Boston College spokesman Jack Dunn to the list of the disgruntled in his Globe column yesterday.

When truth ends up on editing room floor

“Spotlight,” the movie about The Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation of the coverup of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests, had its general release on Friday and film critics agree: “Spotlight” is one of the best movies of the year.1000_jack_dunn

Jack Dunn had a different reaction. After seeing the film at the Loews theater across from Boston Common, he stepped onto the sidewalk and threw up.

The movie sickened him because he is portrayed as someone who minimized the suffering of those who were sexually abused, as someone who tried to steer Globe reporters away from the story, as someone invested in the coverup.

Dunn is a BC High graduate and a member of the school’s board of trustees. He told Cullen, “The things they have me saying in the movie, I never said . . . But worse is the way they have me saying those things, like I didn’t care about the victims, that I tried to make the story go away. The dialogue assigned to me is completely fabricated and represents the opposite of who I am and what I did on behalf of victims. It makes me look callous and indifferent.”

And not just him, Cullen adds:

Dunn isn’t the only real person portrayed in the film who has a beef with McCarthy. Steve Kurkjian, a legendary Globe reporter, is portrayed as a curmudgeon who was dismissive of the importance of the story. That couldn’t be further from the truth . . .

So that’s three now.

As night follows day, the Boston Herald picked up the story and added a fourth name to the list today.

‘Spotlight’ injustices claimed

Screen Shot 2015-11-23 at 2.45.51 PM

Four people who played real-life roles in the uncovering of the Boston clergy sex-abuse scandal say the new film “Spotlight” has put false words in their mouths — and some are demanding apologies and cuts in the movie that showcases the Boston Globe’s reporting.

Boston College public affairs director Jack Dunn, former Globe reporter Stephen Kurkjian, former Globe publisher Richard Gilman, and victim lawyer Eric MacLeish all say their actions were misrepresented in a way that casts them in a negative light, apparently in an effort to add drama to the film.

The Gilman piece – about fact vs. fiction in the movie – appeared in the Arizona Daily Star a few days ago.

Quite intentionally there was no internal discussion whatsoever of potential [business]consequences.

So it is to my extreme dismay that I’m shown on the screen giving voice to one such business concern — exactly the type of thing I had purposely avoided in the few interactions about the investigation. The only true aspect of that brief scene in my office is the outcome: We would challenge the Church in court.

Funny, “Spotlight” is being challenged in court, too. As Cullen noted yesterday, “[Jack Dunn’s] lawyer sent a letter to the filmmakers, demanding that the offending scene be deleted from the movie . . .”

We’ve got plenty of eight-to-five says that never happens.

Boston Globe Namesniks Don’t Read Own Newspaper

October 15, 2015

The hardreading staff is keenly aware that the stately local broadsheet has lots of pages to wade through every day, but still . . .

From today’s Names column:

‘Ambassador’ Brady’s timing is just right at TAG Heuer event

GettyImages-492532126A

Tom Brady was introduced as new “brand ambassador” for luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer at an event in New York this week. What does that mean exactly? Apparently, the Pats QB will be appearing in the company’s upcoming “Don’t Crack Under Pressure” ad campaign.

Apparently?

Yesterday’s Boston Globe, A5.

Boston Herald News-Stalking Stephanos

September 13, 2015

Man, the flirty local tabloid has some crush on Maria, eh?

As the hardreading staff noted, the Boston Herald gave anchor Maria Stephanos’ departure from Fox 25 full-page play in Friday’s edition, versus a paltry Names item in the Boston Globe.

Yesterday it was two pages, with former Fox 25er Doug (VB) Goudie doing the mooning.

[A]s I watched Maria Stephanos’ farewell last night on Fox 25, I couldn’t help but feel that as she was leaving that building, “different” was leaving the Boston TV news market, at least for now.Screen Shot 2015-09-13 at 1.00.20 PM

After all, Maria epitomized everything that Fox was — loud, smart, sassy, engaging … not afraid to mix it up, not afraid to laugh at herself and not afraid to give a hug. Or a “VB!!!!!” in that high pitch only Maria can hit when she is outraged!

Combine Maria’s exit with that of Fox 25 investigative reporter Mike Beaudet, and “different” is now taking a dirt nap.

Today we’re back to one page.

(WARNING: As with a solar eclipse, we advise you not to look directly at the photo of Stephanos and Howie Carr.)

Screen Shot 2015-09-13 at 12.51.06 PM

Meanwhile, crosstown at the Globe, the only mention of Stephanos’ exit or the local TV news scene beyond the aforementioned Names item is this mention in Joshua Miller’s Political Happy Hour on Friday.

STEPHANOS LEAVING FOX 25, via Jessica Heslam on BostonHerald.com: “FOX 25 anchor Maria Stephanos — a fan favorite who has been at the Boston TV station for nearly two decades — is leaving the station to ‘pursue new professional endeavors,’ the station just announced. Her last day is tomorrow. ‘I have decided it’s time for me to embark on a new adventure,’ Stephanos said in a statement announcing her surprise departure. …” http://bit.ly/1ODowij

How sad is that – the Globe once again a lively index to the Herald, instead of the other way around.

Ouch.

Herald Beats Globe on Maria Stephanos Story

September 11, 2015

Chalk one up for the feisty local tabloid.

When Fox 25 anchor Maria Stephanos announced yesterday she was leaving the station after almost 20 years, she kept the details pretty skimpy (via TVSpy).

“I have decided it’s time for me to embark on a new adventure,” said Stephanos. “I will miss working with this extraordinary team, but I know FOX25 is in good hands and will continue to grow. I am beyond blessed, to deliver the news in the place where I grew up. New England viewers are savvy and smart and I love them for that. Thank you for making me part of your family.”

And today’s Boston Globe Names column kept it that way.

Crosstown at the Boston Herald, though, Jessica Heslam had a lot more to offer.

Fox’s Stephanos stuns with exit

Screen Shot 2015-09-11 at 12.29.54 PM

Boston’s TV news scene was blindsided by the shocking
announcement that Fox 25
powerhouse anchor Maria Stephanos is leaving after nearly two decades — just 11 months after the station’s new owner came to town.

Stephanos was tight-lipped on her stunning exit from Fox 25 yesterday but her husband, Dale Stephanos, alluded to bad blood between his popular anchor wife and station owner Cox Media Group when he wrote on his Facebook page:

“It’s so rare to find people with real integrity these days. Harder still to find people like that in the media. I’m so proud and happy for my wife today. This took a lot of guts.”

Drove her out graf:

The new owners want shorter stories and more of them. They also want to boost the number of stories in communities with the highest number of meters that track TV ratings, sources said.

Okay. Now it’s making some sense. Although we’re sure there’s more to come. Check both dailies for details.

Brady Courtroom Artist’s Second Effort? Sketchy.

September 1, 2015

Poor Jane Rosenberg, the courtroom artist whose drawing of Tom Brady during a Deflategate hearing, well, blew up last month. Rosenberg got her mulligan yesterday, a matter of great interest here in Bradyville.

The Boston Globe’s Namesniks gave her new sketch a thumb’s up.

Artist has second shot at sketching Tom Brady

Everyone likes a good comeback story. On Monday, courtroom sketch artist Jane Rosenberg got hers.IMG_3594A

Rosenberg made national news Aug. 12 after her less-than-flattering sketches of Tom Brady from his Deflategate hearing went viral. She told the Globe that day, of her courtroom work, “I don’t tend to flatter people and make them look beautiful.” Later she said she received hundreds of e-mails from fans who were unhappy with the depiction of their quarterback. But on Monday, after Brady left the courtroom, Rosenberg unveiled her new look for the Patriots star. Looks more like the guy we know, right?

Actually, no, according to crosstown rival Boston Herald.

Artist’s 2nd Brady sketch draws different critiques

Screen Shot 2015-09-01 at 12.40.47 PM

Courtroom sketch artist Jane Rosenberg got another crack at drawing Tom Brady following a disastrous first attempt that depicted the Patriots quarterback as ghoulish and uncomely, opening her up to ridicule and scorn from Patriots nation.

Unfortunately, her second sketch bears a striking resemblance to the wrong All-Pro quarterback.

Trying to tone down the rigid features she gave Brady’s lower face in the first sketch, Rosenberg ended up extending and stretching Brady’s forehead, creating a figure that more closely resembles his rival, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.

Ouch.

Keith Richards Needs a Brain Transfusion

Herald Coverage of Rob’s Girlfriend More Gronktastic

April 30, 2015

The newly minted girlfriend of New England Patriot tight (usually) end Rob Gronkowski hit the highly coveted dailies double today: Inside Track in the Boston Herald, Names in the Boston Globe.

Begin with the stately local broadsheet.

She’s cheering for Benrus (and Gronk) now

camille1AFormer Patriots cheerleader Camille Kostek has had a busy week on the Internet.

On Monday, TMZ broke the news that the Connecticut native was dating Patriot Rob Gronkowski. Meanwhile, it was also announced Monday that she’d been named the new ambassador for the Rhode Island company Benrus. By Tuesday afternoon, the military-inspired fashion brand had launched a new website with Kostek all over it.

And how does she feel about putting away the pompoms?

“I kind of relate myself to Vince Wilfork,” she said, of her last big gig being the Super Bowl. “There wasn’t a better way to close it out.”

Wonder if Wilfork is feeling like the Camille Kostek of Houston?

Probably not, eh?

Crosstown at the frothy local tabloid, the former communications major at Eastern Connecticut State showed that she has her priorities straight.

Former New England
Patriots cheerleader Camille Kostek would like to be known as more than just the girl who has been out on a few dates with Pats one-man party Rob Gronkowski!

“I know the stuff about Rob has been in the headlines, but I’m super excited to talk about myself and my career,” Camille told the Track. “I’ve really been working hard and was working hard before I was ever able to meet him.”

Absolutely.

In contrast to the Globe, the Herald associates Kostek with the polar opposite of Vince Wilfork.

So does she take inspiration from the most famous supermodel of all: Mrs. Tom Brady?

“Oh my goodness, do I aspire to be like Gisele?” she said. “I just turned 23, I’m enjoying being young and focusing on my career. This is a super-exciting moment, but I’m just starting to blossom.”

Ouch.

So it’s not just the boyfriend who knows how to hit.

Boston Herald a Day Late, Dolor Short

March 5, 2015

From today’s Boston Globe Names column:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 10.36.38 AM

Nothing on this sad story in the Boston Herald, but Boston magazine did have this yesterday:

Boston Marathon Survivors and Newlyweds Announce Split

Rebekah Gregory and Pete DiMartino were married for 10 months.

Pete DiMartino, Rebekah Gregory

Almost a year after walking down the aisle, Rebekah Gregory and Pete DiMartino, Boston Marathon bombing survivors whose romance unfolded in the public eye, have decided to separate.

Gregory and DiMartino’s uplifting story made national headlines last February when TheKnot.com sponsored their dream wedding. They’ve been together since November 2012, and appeared on Ellen last February.

No credit to BoMag in the Globe piece. But that’s par for the course. We’ll see what the Herald does when it finally catches up.

Boston Herald Devotes Front Page to Bad Cos

December 11, 2014

From our One Town, Two Different Worlds desk

Welcome once again to the parallel universes of the Boston dailies.

Exhibit Umpteen: Today’s coverage of the latest wrinkle in the Decline and Fall of Bill Cosby.

Boston Herald Page One:

Screen Shot 2014-12-11 at 12.29.05 PM

The story gets all of page 5, including a column by Bob McGovern and a news report from Erin Smith and Donna Goodison.

Crosstown at the Boston Globe, the story – not surprisingly – gets buried at the bottom of today’s Names column.

But it’s not just story placement that distinguished the two papers. It’s the language they use that really sets them apart. Just a few examples (feisty tabloid on left, stately broadsheet on right):

embattled funnyman . . . Bill Cosby

potential game-changing legal loophole . . . defamation lawsuit

Cosby’s handlers . . . Cosby’s lawyer and publicist

lurid sexual assault accusations . . .  alleged attack

Try it yourself! It’s fun for the whole mishpocheh.
