Boston Herald Radio All Pimped Out to Advertisers

February 20, 2015

As the hardreading staff noted several months ago, the Boston Herald is not exactly covert in its catering to the few advertisers it manages to attract.

The Herald Runs on Dunkin’

As our Walt Whitman desk attests on a regular basis, the Boston Herald is a past master at using its newshole to promote . . . that’s right – the Herald. And now apparently, the fuzzy local tabloid is offering the same sort of ad-itorial package to its advertisers.

Witness the latest installment of the paper’s daily plug for Boston Herald Radio, the webcast that up to several people a day listen to.

Nice bit of venial synergy for Dunkin’ Donuts, eh? Lede of the “interview” at left:

Todd Wallace, field marketing manager for Dunkin’ Donuts, joined Boston Herald Radio’s “Morning Meeting” with Hillary Chabot and Joe Battenfeld to talk about the iconic coffee chain’s new products.

Now comes this piece from the Nieman Journalism Lab’s Joseph Lichterman about local newspapers that hope online radio can become significant revenue generators. Along the way, Lichterman nails the coffin shut on the thirsty local tabloid’s unabashed willingness to pimp out any part of its editorial content to advertisers.

Advertising has also been slow for Boston Herald Radio, but the station has been able to introduce new forms of advertising by integrating advertisers into segments of its shows. Last fall, a marketing manager for Dunkin’ Donuts appeared on the Herald’s morning show to promote Dunkin’s new dark roast coffee.

“Sales love it, we love it in programming, and the clients love it,” said Herald Radio executive producer Tom Shattuck.

The first and third of those make perfect sense. But . . . we love it in programming?

That’s just sad.

Boston Herald Pimps Out Page One

February 13, 2015

It’s not exactly a banner day for the Boston Herald. Here’s the front page that landed at the Global Worldwide Headquarters this morning (photo courtesy of the Missus).

Then again, this isn’t the first time the thirsty local tabloid has sold off its banner. Here’s an example from about 10 years ago that we recently noted (actual front page at left):

The hardreading staff is pretty sure the Herald has done much the same in the intervening decade, but we lack photographic evidence to make the charge stick.

Regardless, one last thing: That Full Paper Inside at upper right of today’s selloff? That depends on what your definition of full is. It’s certainly full of something.

Globe Has $uper Ball with Commemorative Section

February 8, 2015

Over the past few years the hardreading staff has dutifully chronicled the staggering ad-vantage the Boston Globe has in selling newspaper ads in this town, but today’s edition is downright knee-buckling.

Say hello to the Globe’s 28-page Special Commemorative Section.

Grand Stand is chockablock with ads like this one:

And this one:

And this one:

(The hardshopping staff never heard of Big Y, but man, they gotta lotta stores.)

And there are a whole lot more ads where they came from.

Crosstown at the Boston Herald, meanwhile, the thirsty local tabloid has no commemorative section, just this:

And this:

That’s just sad.

Boston Globe Is in the Tank for Bill Belichick

February 6, 2015

Actually, that’s not entirely accurate (hey – we all need clicks). Today’s Boston Globe features this in the Tank McNamara comic strip:

Haters gonna Hatriot, eh? They’re the New England Cheaters for as long as Brady/Belichick are around. Not to mention the Kraft family.

Then again, now that we have mentioned them, the Krafties finally did the right thing and ran this ad in today’s Boston Herald.

The thirsty local tabloid plastered it on Page 3. Cheers, yes?

Robert Kraft Hates the Boston Herald

February 5, 2015

Boston’s collective hangover after yesterday’s Patriots Victory Parade is even more headpounding at the Boston Herald, which got stiffed today by the entire Kraft family.

Here’s what the Super Bowl champs ran in today’s Boston Globe:

And here’s what they ran in the thirsty local tabloid:

At least the Krafts spread the love on Monday, running this ad in both local dailies:

Dunno what the Herald did to tick them off in the interim but once again, Dis-advantage: Herald.

Boston Globe Has Crushing Ad-vantage Over Herald

January 18, 2015

As one of the up to 17 home subscribers to the Boston Herald, the hardreading staff naturally worries for the health of the feisty local tabloid. Especially since the paper’s Sunday circulation lags significantly behind the weekday circ, a reversal of the normal pattern for daily newspapers. Of course, the Herald is nothing if not abnormal.

Today’s edition of the Herald gives cause for even more alarm. The news section has only one full-page ad and the equivalent of maybe four more pages in bits and pieces. The Sports section  has even fewer. Talk about ad-nemic.

Crosstown at the Boston Globe, meanwhile, these large display ads appeared in the A section alone.

Two for Macy’s:

One for Bloomie’s:

And one for some anti-abortion outfit called Project Rachel:

Oh, yes – plus about another dozen ads that total up to around six more paid pages.

And that’s not an especially good Sunday for the stately local broadsheet.

We know Bloomingdale’s is a stretch but, Hey! Macy’s! Show the thirsty local tabloid a little love, eh?

Why Do Union Food Workers Hate the Herald?

August 7, 2014

Exhibit Umpteen in the Boston Herald’s perpetual dis-ad-vantage appears in today’s Boston Globe. (In two parts for legibility.)

So why would’t the fine folks at UFCW Local 1445 run the same ad in the feisty local tabloid? The harddialing staff called to ask just that and . . . we got voicemail. We’ll keep you posted.

Meanwhile, the union snub come in the wake of Nike’s giving the Herald the air (but not the Air) on Tuesday when it ran this ad in the Globe to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Joan Benoit’s groundbreaking run in the first women’s Olympic Marathon.

Man, the thirsty local tabloid can’t get any love, can it?
