A couple of noteworthy ads in today’s local dailies that are, once again, worlds apart.

Boston Globe, page A7:

That ad did not – wait for it – run in today’s Boston Herald. But this one did.

(Note the fine print: “Cruise Travel Outlet is not associated with or represent Market Basket in any way.” No surprise there, outside maybe of the tortured grammar.)

That ad – no surprise either – did not run in today’s Globe. But this front-page piece did.

One more thing Arthur T. Demoulas is likely grateful for: He doesn’t have to go on that gruesome-looking cruise.


Market Basket (Finally!) Shows the Herald Some Love

It’s been a long, dry summer for the Boston Herald in terms of Market Basket advertising. From the very start of the Demoulas Slapfight/Market Basket Rumpus, the beleaguered supermarket chain has relentlessly bypassed the thirsty local tabloid, choosing time and again to run ads only in the Boston Globe.

It actually started last summer, when the Employees & Management of Demoulas/Market Basket ran this full page in the Globe:

Then, facing an employee/customer revolt this summer because the board of directors had ignored the ad above and fired Arthur T., the new Market Basket CEOs ran this ad, also exclusive to the Globe:

That plea, of course, fell on deaf ears, so the increasing desperate Arthur S. forces resorted to this full-page Help Wanted ad – again, just in the stately local broadsheet:

That one really hurt, since Market Basket was essentially telling Herald readers: We not only don’t want you to shop here, we don’t want you to work here either.

Ouch.

But wait! Here’s what ran in today’s – yes! – Herald.

Why Do Union Food Workers Hate the Herald?

Exhibit Umpteen in the Boston Herald’s perpetual dis-ad-vantage appears in today’s Boston Globe. (In two parts for legibility.)

So why would’t the fine folks at UFCW Local 1445 run the same ad in the feisty local tabloid? The harddialing staff called to ask just that and . . . we got voicemail. We’ll keep you posted.

Meanwhile, the union snub come in the wake of Nike’s giving the Herald the air (but not the Air) on Tuesday when it ran this ad in the Globe to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Joan Benoit’s groundbreaking run in the first women’s Olympic Marathon.

Monday’s local dailies both featured the obligatory quotidian update on the Demoulas Slapfight/Market Basket Rumpus.

The Boston Globe’s Page One piece:

Pressure mounts on Market Basket board of directors

No decision on offer of buyout by Demoulas as chain’s losses increase

With a multibillion-dollar supermarket empire hanging in the balance, the Market Basket board of directors met Monday to again consider a buyout offer from Arthur T. Demoulas but agreed only to continue negotiating, according to a person briefed on the discussions.

Demoulas had previously set the end of Monday as the deadline for rival members of his family to respond to his offer to buy their half of the company. The board’s continued negotiations will keep Demoulas’s bid on the table for now, according to the person familiar with the discussions, but both sides are facing pressure to resolve the family feud that has paralyzed the 71-store chain and caused tens of millions of dollars in losses.

 

Among those pressures: a total revolt by Market Basket store managers.

Meanwhile, managers of some stores signed a petition stating that they would resign unless Arthur T. Demoulas is reinstated as president of Market Basket or if the company is sold to an outside buyer. It was unclear how many managers had signed the petition Monday night.

 

Excuse us – it was not unclear to the Boston Herald.

Market Basket managers to quit unless CEO reinstated

Market Basket managers have reaffirmed their commitment to working for nobody else but fired CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, saying they’ll quit if he isn’t reinstated — a threat that could remove the working management of most of the chain’s stores, already reeling from a loss of customers and protests by thousands of workers.

Managers and assistant managers from 68 of the Tewksbury chain’s 71 stores had signed a petition by yesterday evening stating they would resign immediately if Demoulas isn’t reinstated “with full authority” or another buyer other than Demoulas purchases the company, according to Steve Paulenka, a former Market Basket facilities and operations supervisor who was fired July 20 for helping spearhead employee protests and job walk-offs.

 

So who’s doing a better job of bagging this story?

Saturday’s installment featured this Page One piece in the Boston Globe.

TEWKSBURY — They left their jobs as butchers and baggers, cashiers and clerks, and came from Rochester, N.H., Fitchburg, Raynham, and Milford for a noisy show of worker solidarity against company bosses they distrust.rally5

In an unusual sign of unity and devotion, more than 2,000 supporters of ousted Demoulas Market Basket chief executive Arthur T. Demoulas gathered outside the chain’s headquarters Friday to demand his return to the top of the family supermarket empire.

They carried colorful signs and cheered speeches against corporate greed, all the while risking being fired for skipping work to attend the protest.

“We do this every day until he comes back,” Tom Trainor, a longtime Market Basket supervisor, said of the employee protests on behalf of Demoulas, who was fired in late June by a board controlled by his chief rival and cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas.

There had yet to be fallout last night for Market Basket employees who ditched work yesterday to rally for the reinstatement of the grocery chain’s fired CEO even as their own jobs were on the line.

An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 Market Basket employees and others showed up at the company’s Tewksbury headquarters yesterday to show support for former CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, fired last month by a board aligned with his rival cousin and shareholder, Arthur S. Demoulas.

 

The above appeared on page 13, which likely has nothing to do with the unfortunate (for the Herald) fact that the Market Basket ad did not run in the feisty local tabloid.

But hope springs eternal for the Sunday Boston Herald, yeah?


Herald Gets Its Ads Kicked . . . Again

Do we detect a pattern emerging here?

For the third time in three weeks, Boston Herald readers have been snubbed by a full-page ad aimed at the local citizenry.

(First it was the Marriott at Tudor Wharf memorializing fallen Boston firefighter Stephen F. Minehan; then it was the Chicago Blackhawk saluting the Boston Bruins.)

Now it’s the Employees & Management of Demoulas/Market Basket, who ran this ad in Wednesday’s Boston Globe:

Notice the ad did not mention Arthur S. Demoulas, the “other” member of the Board of Directors and the motivating force behind the power play, as the Globe noted here:

Market Basket CEO faces revolt led by his cousin

At a typical corporation, the chief executive is expected to be beholden to the board of directors. But Market Basket grocery titan Arthur T. Demoulas asserted otherwise one day when some board members challenged his authority to spend money as he saw fit.

 

“There’s only one boss in the company,” Demoulas told directors in August 2012, according to a transcript of the board meeting. “There’s not two. There’s not three. There’s not five. There’s only one boss.”

For more than two decades, Market Basket has been anything but typical.

Even for the most contentious boardrooms, Demoulas’s statement underscores the strong-willed personalities in his extended family, which built the Market Basket chain into a regional powerhouse despite spending much of their time fighting one another. The latest battle again pits Arthur T. Demoulas against his cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas, who is moving to oust the former after finally gaining control of the board this year.

 

Excellent dustup, and well worthy of a newspaper ad war (the hardreading staff is hoping for an Arthur T. rebuttal in Thursday’s Globe.)

But apparently not in the Herald, which the Employees & Management of Demoulas/Market Basket deemed unworthy as an advertising platform.

Perhaps they don’t value the readers of the feisty local tabloid.

Or maybe it’s because of backhanded coverage like this in Saturday’s Herald:
