Why Does Jon Lester Hate the Herald?

Former Red Sox hurler Jon Lester is getting a nice sendoff today in the local dailies.

The Boston Herald has him co-starring in this nifty charticle:

Crosstown at the Boston Globe, the redoubtable Bob Ryan ranks Lester among the great Red Sox lefties.

Jon Lester is a very good contemporary pitcher. He may once again wind up starting Game 1 in a Division Series, an ALCS, and a World Series. He has proven that he can handle the spotlight. There were no, “Yeah, buts . . . ” He is low maintenance, thoroughly professional, and eminently rootable. I wish the Red Sox had found a way to keep him.

And he certainly has a place in Red Sox history.

He is, however, not the best lefthanded pitcher in Red Sox history, as some have been saying these past few days.

I’ve got him slotted at No. 4.

 

Regardless of the third-runnerup slot, Lester ran this full-page ad in the Globe’s Sports section today.

Eagan v. Remy, Round 2

As the hardreading staff previously noted, last week Herald columnist Margery Eagan went sour on NESN broadcaster Jerry Remy’s return to the booth, and, in an interview on WEEI’s Dennis & Callahan show, Pres. Red Sox Nation returned the flavor, ripping Eagan’s column without naming her. (Neither, oddly, did the Herald in reporting the Remy interview.)

Today the Boston Strong Girl is back in the ring, counterpunching with this piece.

Put anger aside, do what’s right, Jerry Remy

They tell me I ticked off Jerry Remy.

Last week I wrote a column asking why Jerry and Phoebe Remy would seek custody of their granddaughter Arianna. Their son is in jail, accused of stabbing W2ST6100.JPGArianna’s mother to death. Remy’s other two children also have a history of arrests for violent attacks.

Questioning his ability to be Arianna’s grandparent made Jerry Remy mad. He went on WEEI with Herald columnist Gerry Callahan and called what I wrote “disgusting.”

Well, I may disgust him again today for asking why he won’t do the right thing by Red Sox Nation and step aside at NESN.

 

(Fun fact to know and tell: Eagan went to high school in Fall River with Phoebe Remy.)

Eagan concludes with this: “[E]verywhere you look along the long, ugly road that put Jared [in jail], you see Jerry and Phoebe Remy, too. There just can’t be a RemDawg anymore.”

Okay. You’re on deck, BlemDawg.

 


A Tale of Two Citings (One Discloses, the Other Doesn’t)

As the hardreading staff has repeatedly noted (here too), the editors at the Boston Globe are pretty loosey-goosey in acknowledging that Red Sox principal owner John Henry also owns the paper.

Today’s edition just reinforces that slapdash approach.

From Dan Shaughnessy’s Page One piece:

As glare intensifies, Remy resolves to stay put

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jerry Remy has no plans to step down as color commentator on NESN Red Sox broadcasts and says he plans to stay in the booth throughout the season, even as his son Jared prepares to go on trial in October in the murder of Jennifer Martel.maeda_26remy_met1

“I’m planning on being in Baltimore Monday,’’ Remy said Thursday afternoon, speaking publicly for the first time since Sunday’s comprehensive and explosive Globe report on the criminal history of his son.

This is an unusual situation. Truly. There’s never been anything quite like it. It’s an awful and awkward intersection of Boston baseball folklore and the real world of murder, justice, family loyalty, and fan allegiance to the brand of the Red Sox and the persona of Remy.

 

Later in the piece Shaughnessy writes this: “Earlier this week, Red Sox (and Globe) owner John Henry told WCVB: ‘I’ve told [Remy] all of us in Red Sox Nation stand behind him. It’s a terrible thing he’s been going through, and we’re really glad to have him back.’'”

Score one for the Disclosure Dweebs. (Let us know if we should start a Facebook group, yeah?)

In the Sports section, though, it’s a different picture. From Chad Finn’s Sports Media piece:

No reason to oust Remy

Revelations lead to heated debate

In the days following Eric Moskowitz’s exhaustive report in the Sunday Globe on accused murderer Jared Remy’s sickening history of Jerry-Remy---AP-thumb-635x463-124646violence and the court system’s sickening history of not holding him accountable, there was little gray area to be found in a fierce if ancillary debate:

Should his father, longtime and legendary Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy, retain his job at NESN?

Based on the reaction early in the week I gathered from sports radio, television, social media, and e-mail, the vocal majority strongly believed Remy should resign or NESN should nudge him aside.

 

Finn made it clear that he stood with the minority, concluding “I can’t in good conscience suggest he should lose his job. There already has been far too much lost already.”

What Finn didn’t make clear is that John Henry is the boss of both of them.

Call them The Gang That Couldn’t Cite Straight.

 


Once Again, Boston Globe Less Than Fenway Frank

As the hardreading staff has previously noted (here too), the Boston Globe has been pretty loosey-goosey in meeting its disclosure responsibilities about John Henry’s dual ownership of the Globe and the Boston Red Sox.

And today the Globeniks extended their slump.

Red Sox to open Lansdowne hot dog stand

Some Fenway fans apparently have insatiable appetites — but not necessarily for baseball.

Hoping to capitalize on Red Sox Nation’s hunger for Fenway Franks, the organization plans to start selling the famous hot dogs outside the ballpark, at a chin041313fenway_biz8Lansdowne Street concession stand. Even when a game isn’t on the menu.

Boston’s Zoning Board of Appeals on Tuesday gave unanimous approval for the stand, which will also serve other food and nonalcoholic beverages. The opening date and hours of operation have not been set, but the Red Sox plan to have it up and running this season, said spokeswoman Zineb Curran.

 

And etc. But nowhere does the piece acknowledge that John Henry’s newspaper is reporting on John Henry’s corporate interests.

Seriously?

Hey, Boston Globe Publisher Henry:  Hasn’t anyone told you that it could be bad for business if people start viewing your paper as the Fenway Gazette & Papi?

We think you know the answer to that.

 


Herald More Frank Than Globe About Fenway Food Expansion

Saturday’s local dailies present a nifty case study for those who worry that John Henry’s purchase of the Boston Globe will crimp the paper’s coverage of their kissing’ cousin Red Sox.

From yesterday’s Boston Herald:

Fenway franks to go?

Sox seek OK to sell food during non-ballpark hours

It appears Red Sox Nation can’t get enough of Fenway franks.040912fenwaynl19

The team is seeking city approval for a takeout concession on Lansdowne Street, near Gate C, that would be open during non-ballpark hours . . .

The team’s takeout concept is the latest in a string of non-baseball game money-makers designed to make the most of America’s oldest ballpark, which Red Sox owner John Henry this week said has a shelf life of another 30 years.

 

Far longer (we think) than the shelf life of a Fenway Frank. Not to get technical about it.

Speaking of which, from Saturday’s Boston Globe:

Nothing, as of 1:39 Sunday morning.

But the hardreading staff will wait to pass judgment until the Boston Sunday Globe is published, because of this (via the redoubtable Dan Kennedy’s Media Nation):

  • Boston Globe: Weekdays, 245,572 . . . Sundays, 382,452
  • Boston Herald: Weekdays, 95,929 . . .  Sundays, 73,043

A piece in the Sunday Globe would get 50% more exposure than a Saturday piece, and roughly four times the circulation of Saturday’s Herald.

So . . . [snooze graf goes here]

At 11:45 Sunday morning we check out the Globe and . . . nothing.

Not good, Globeniks.

The concern people have about Henry’s Globe ownership is not so much whether Dan Shaughnessy will keep poking him with a stick, but whether the stately local broadsheet will be as vigilant about off-field matters such as these (also from the Herald):

[I]n December, the team won city approval to extend alcohol sales during baseball games and other events and to sell liquor on Yawkey Way.

The request to increase Fenway alcohol sales came less than three months after the Red Sox reached a controversial $7.3 million deal with the Boston Redevelopment Authority for an easement to shut down part of Yawkey Way for concessions during games and other events.

 

John Henry isn’t just a ballclub owner. He’s a real estate/media/financial mogul. The Globe needs to treat him as such.

 


Hot Stove, Tepid Team

Today’s Boston Herald puts on the Page One pom-poms for the Olde Towne Team and its prospects for the upcoming season. Via the Newseum’s Today’s Front Pages:

The piece in the Sports section has a level of optimism that’s exclusive to pre-spring-training days.

Cherington optimistic as spring training nears

Two weeks from today, nearly three dozen Red Sox pitchers and catchers will be in Fort Myers, bracing for their first spring training workout. And shortly thereafter, predictions will begin to roll in.

Not even the Mayans would be so bold as to call the Sox a playoff team.

Ben Cherington respectfully disagrees.

“I believe we will contend,” the Red Sox general manager said Thursday in a sitdown with the Herald. “There is no reason we shouldn’t contend in 2013. But we also want to build something really good for a long time. We’re confident we will.”

 

A confidence that’s likely exclusive to him, but why get technical about it.

Meanwhile, the Sox went for more traditional advertising in the Boston Globe:

Odd approach, yes? Except in Red Sox Nation, of course.

Also odd, the ad did not run in the Herald. Then again, maybe the Sox figured the Page One promo was enough.
