A Tale of Two Citings (One Discloses, the Other Doesn’t)

As the hardreading staff has repeatedly noted (here too), the editors at the Boston Globe are pretty loosey-goosey in acknowledging that Red Sox principal owner John Henry also owns the paper.

Today’s edition just reinforces that slapdash approach.

From Dan Shaughnessy’s Page One piece:

As glare intensifies, Remy resolves to stay put

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jerry Remy has no plans to step down as color commentator on NESN Red Sox broadcasts and says he plans to stay in the booth throughout the season, even as his son Jared prepares to go on trial in October in the murder of Jennifer Martel.maeda_26remy_met1

“I’m planning on being in Baltimore Monday,’’ Remy said Thursday afternoon, speaking publicly for the first time since Sunday’s comprehensive and explosive Globe report on the criminal history of his son.

This is an unusual situation. Truly. There’s never been anything quite like it. It’s an awful and awkward intersection of Boston baseball folklore and the real world of murder, justice, family loyalty, and fan allegiance to the brand of the Red Sox and the persona of Remy.

 

Later in the piece Shaughnessy writes this: “Earlier this week, Red Sox (and Globe) owner John Henry told WCVB: ‘I’ve told [Remy] all of us in Red Sox Nation stand behind him. It’s a terrible thing he’s been going through, and we’re really glad to have him back.’'”

Score one for the Disclosure Dweebs. (Let us know if we should start a Facebook group, yeah?)

In the Sports section, though, it’s a different picture. From Chad Finn’s Sports Media piece:

No reason to oust Remy

Revelations lead to heated debate

In the days following Eric Moskowitz’s exhaustive report in the Sunday Globe on accused murderer Jared Remy’s sickening history of Jerry-Remy---AP-thumb-635x463-124646violence and the court system’s sickening history of not holding him accountable, there was little gray area to be found in a fierce if ancillary debate:

Should his father, longtime and legendary Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy, retain his job at NESN?

Based on the reaction early in the week I gathered from sports radio, television, social media, and e-mail, the vocal majority strongly believed Remy should resign or NESN should nudge him aside.

 

Finn made it clear that he stood with the minority, concluding “I can’t in good conscience suggest he should lose his job. There already has been far too much lost already.”

What Finn didn’t make clear is that John Henry is the boss of both of them.

Call them The Gang That Couldn’t Cite Straight.

 


Remy Smartin’ in Boston Dailies?

Well, yes and no.

Jared Remy’s certainly hurting after the Boston Globe blowtorched him on Page One Sunday. (In that piece, it should be noted, the stately local broadsheet yet again failed to disclose that Red Sox principal owner John Henry also owns the paper. Or is the hardreading staff the only one who still cares about that kind of stuff?)

Jerry Remy? Jury’s still out.

Start with Gerry Callahan’s full-throated support in today’s Boston Herald.

Red Sox job is Jerry Remy’s call

At what point do you give up on a kid?

When exactly do you throw up your hands, turn your back and walk away from your own child?_CE29101.JPG

Jerry and Phoebe Remy are the parents of a 35-year-old monster with a long history of hurting women — particularly pregnant ones — but they haven’t reached that point yet. Their son Jared is evil to the core, but they still visit him in jail. They presumably pay for his lawyers. They probably hope and pray he will once again come before a pliable Massachusetts judge and avoid the harshest penalties allowed by law.

Somehow this doesn’t sit well with many Red Sox fans who think Jerry Remy should no longer be allowed to sit in the NESN booth with Don Orsillo and talk about baseball.

 

 

But it sits okay with Callahan, who ends his piece this way: “Jerry Remy admits he made mistakes and he knows things will never be the same for Remdawg Inc. But he shouldn’t be stripped of his livelihood and sent home to stare at the walls. Jared should go to prison for the rest of his life. Jerry should go back to work, and, finally and at last, give up on his rotten, hopeless kid.”

Crosstown at the Globe, not everyone is so forgiving. Alan Wirzbicki in a point-counterpoint with Alex Beam:

[I]f Jerry Remy sold used cars, then maybe none of it would matter. The questionable decisions an employee makes with his own paycheck are usually his own business.

But Jerry Remy doesn’t sell used cars. His job is to be a particular TV persona — the gentle, chuckling color commentator on Sox games. Playing that role has made him popular. But now that’s not an image that he can project without turning New England’s collective stomach.

 

Now it’s Beam’s turn:

I understand that when most people read the story of Jerry and Jared, they see an entitled, well-off sports celebrity gaming the legal system on behalf of his wild and dangerous son. I see something different: a complicated, confusing morass, of biblical pain inflicted on a family that wants to balance its love for a disturbed davis_st2278_sptschild against society’s legitimate expectations of personal safety.

Jared is in jail, where he belongs. I’m sure his father and his family are living in a special kind of hell. If the sins of the son are visited on the father, well, that’s not what I call justice.

 

But it’s what a letter to the Globe editor does. Here’s Frank Hannon of Melrose:

CONCERNING THE return of sportscaster Jerry Remy to the booth as his son, Jared, awaits trial in the murder of his girlfriend: Perhaps charity demands that NESN be given the benefit of the doubt about what the network knew of the elder Remy’s role in the repeated enabling of his son. However, the Globe’s expose of the monumentally sordid circumstances of Jared Remy’s record removes all doubt (“For Jared Remy, leniency was the rule until one lethal night,” Page A1, March 23).

Who will be able to watch Remy without being reminded of the unimaginable havoc wrought by his son? Even for crass economic reasons alone, let alone the basic duty of social responsibility that NESN owes the community — and yes, there is such a thing — how can NESN possibly allow Remy to stay on the air?

Once Again, Boston Globe Less Than Fenway Frank

As the hardreading staff has previously noted (here too), the Boston Globe has been pretty loosey-goosey in meeting its disclosure responsibilities about John Henry’s dual ownership of the Globe and the Boston Red Sox.

And today the Globeniks extended their slump.

Red Sox to open Lansdowne hot dog stand

Some Fenway fans apparently have insatiable appetites — but not necessarily for baseball.

Hoping to capitalize on Red Sox Nation’s hunger for Fenway Franks, the organization plans to start selling the famous hot dogs outside the ballpark, at a chin041313fenway_biz8Lansdowne Street concession stand. Even when a game isn’t on the menu.

Boston’s Zoning Board of Appeals on Tuesday gave unanimous approval for the stand, which will also serve other food and nonalcoholic beverages. The opening date and hours of operation have not been set, but the Red Sox plan to have it up and running this season, said spokeswoman Zineb Curran.

 

And etc. But nowhere does the piece acknowledge that John Henry’s newspaper is reporting on John Henry’s corporate interests.

Seriously?

Hey, Boston Globe Publisher Henry:  Hasn’t anyone told you that it could be bad for business if people start viewing your paper as the Fenway Gazette & Papi?

We think you know the answer to that.

 


Boston Globe Promotions Bleed into Boston Globe Editorial

As the hardreading staff has previously noted, Mrs. John Henry (a.k.a. Linda Pizutti) is heading up the John-Henry-owned Boston Globe’s GRANT program, which purports to provide financial assistance to local community programs through Globe-subscriber contributions.

That’s all well and good, but Saturday’s Globe seemed to cross the line with this item in its Business section.

Globe Still Won’t Chew Over Fenway Food Expansion

The Boston Red Sox are engaged in yet another Fenway land grab, as the Boston Herald noted on Saturday.

Sox seek OK to sell food during non-ballpark hours

It appears Red Sox Nation can’t get enough of Fenway franks.

The team is seeking city approval for a takeout concession on Lansdowne Street, near Gate C, that would be open during non-ballpark hours.040912fenwaynl19

“It would be located within the ballpark in a space next to the WEEI broadcast booth,” Red Sox spokeswoman Zineb Curran said. “It’s a new, small concession stand that would have its own entry door off of Lansdowne Street” . . .

The team’s takeout concept is the latest in a string of non-baseball game money-makers designed to make the most of America’s oldest ballpark, which Red Sox owner John Henry this week said has a shelf life of another 30 years.

 

The Boston Globe, as the hardreading staff has noted, did not cover this story on Saturday. Or Sunday. Or today.

The stately local broadsheet did, however, report on that 30-year shelf life of Fenway Park.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — There is an expiration date on Fenway Park, Red Sox principal owner John Henry said on Wednesday. But it won’t come due for another 30 years or so.

The oldest ballpark in the majors is structurally sound and the only improvements left to make would be to renovate the press box and other areas in the upper section behind home plate.

“You won’t see major changes. Those, I think, have been explored, thought about and accomplished,” Henry said. “Structurally there is an expiration date. Someone at some point in decades ahead will have to address the possibility of a new ballpark.”

 

Yes, and someone should have addressed Henry’s ownership of the Boston Globe in that sunny-side-up piece last week.

But no one did.

That’s two strikes in one week. Not exactly encouraging.


Herald More Frank Than Globe About Fenway Food Expansion

Saturday’s local dailies present a nifty case study for those who worry that John Henry’s purchase of the Boston Globe will crimp the paper’s coverage of their kissing’ cousin Red Sox.

From yesterday’s Boston Herald:

The team’s takeout concept is the latest in a string of non-baseball game money-makers designed to make the most of America’s oldest ballpark, which Red Sox owner John Henry this week said has a shelf life of another 30 years.

 

Far longer (we think) than the shelf life of a Fenway Frank. Not to get technical about it.

Speaking of which, from Saturday’s Boston Globe:

Nothing, as of 1:39 Sunday morning.

But the hardreading staff will wait to pass judgment until the Boston Sunday Globe is published, because of this (via the redoubtable Dan Kennedy’s Media Nation):

  • Boston Globe: Weekdays, 245,572 . . . Sundays, 382,452
  • Boston Herald: Weekdays, 95,929 . . .  Sundays, 73,043

A piece in the Sunday Globe would get 50% more exposure than a Saturday piece, and roughly four times the circulation of Saturday’s Herald.

So . . . [snooze graf goes here]

At 11:45 Sunday morning we check out the Globe and . . . nothing.

Not good, Globeniks.

The concern people have about Henry’s Globe ownership is not so much whether Dan Shaughnessy will keep poking him with a stick, but whether the stately local broadsheet will be as vigilant about off-field matters such as these (also from the Herald):

[I]n December, the team won city approval to extend alcohol sales during baseball games and other events and to sell liquor on Yawkey Way.

The request to increase Fenway alcohol sales came less than three months after the Red Sox reached a controversial $7.3 million deal with the Boston Redevelopment Authority for an easement to shut down part of Yawkey Way for concessions during games and other events.

 

John Henry isn’t just a ballclub owner. He’s a real estate/media/financial mogul. The Globe needs to treat him as such.

 


Globe Sells Globe Sale Short

It started yesterday with Jason Schwartz’s big John Henry takeout (via Boston Daily).

Will John Henry Save the Globe?

Maybe, but his ambitions are much grander. “I feel my mortality,” he says. So here’s his plan: He’s going to use the time he has left on earth to try to save journalism itself.

Just days after striking a deal to buy the Boston Globe from the New York Times Company last summer, John Henry walked into the paper’s newsroom john-henryas the city’s most important private citizen in decades—maybe centuries. He already owned one great Boston institution, the Red Sox, and now, for a mere $70 million, he’d bought a second.

As he made his way around the room to greet reporters and editors, neither party knew quite what to make of the other. “He was standing, hovering over my desk with an outstretched arm. It was really weird,” one reporter recalls. “Like, ‘Hi, I’m John Henry.’ ‘Oh, hello.’”

“You’re shaking a billionaire’s hand,” says another. “There’s an apprehension to it. Okay, what’s going to happen? We know so little about him.”

 

We know more now, thanks to the Boston magazine piece. For instance, we know this:

[Henry has] decided that it’s time for the Globe to make a move. The prospective sale of the paper’s 16-acre Morrissey Boulevard property, he says, “will provide us with the ability to move into a smaller, more efficient and modern facility in the heart of the city. We believe that there is enough excess value there to fund very important investments in our long-term future, if the community supports development of the property.”

 

As night follows the Daily, today’s Boston Herald jumped right on the story.

John Henry to sell Globe HQ

Moving broadsheet to smaller digs in ‘heart’ of Boston

_AN18577.JPGRed Sox owner John Henry plans to sell The Boston Globe’s headquarters on Morrissey Boulevard and relocate the broadsheet to a smaller facility somewhere “in the heart of” the Hub — but so far he’s made no mention of when the move will happen or what he’ll do with the paper’s printing press operations.

“I’m sure right now there are a lot of people at the Globe wondering what’s going on, but certainly if I were an employee that worked on the printing press I would be concerned,” said Suffolk University journalism chairman Bob Rosenthal.

 

One possibility: a shotgun wedding between the Globe and NESN, which has studios in Watertown.

The decision to sell underlines what many experts have said all along — that the $70 million sale to Henry was mainly a land transaction.

“It is a reminder of how much of the value of the Globe lies in the real estate and physical assets, and how little remains in the financial value of the operating company,” said Nicholas Retsinas, a senior lecturer in real estate at the Harvard Business School.

 

Ouch.

Crosstown at the stately low-cost broadsheet, all’s quiet on the Henry front. We’ll see how long that lasts.

 


Ask John Henry: Seriously? Boston Globe Publisher?

UnknownThe John Henry Era at the Boston Globe is off to a, well, Henryesque start (see also John Henry Red Sox and John Henry Liverpool).

Yesterday’s press release from the stately local broadsheet:

JOHN HENRY ASSUMES ROLE OF BOSTON GLOBE PUBLISHER; MIKE SHEEHAN APPOINTED GLOBE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Boston (Jan. 30, 2014) – John Henry Jr., owner of The Boston Globe, will assume the additional title of publisher and Mike Sheehan, the former Hill Holliday chief executive who has been consulting at the Globe, will become Chief Executive Officer, it was announced today. Sheehan will oversee all day-to-day business operations at the Globe while Henry concentrates on strategy

In October 2013, Henry purchased The Boston Globe and its websites, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and its website, and Globe Direct, a direct mail operation. With the purchase, he became the third owner in the 141-year history of the Globe. Today, he becomes the ninth publisher.

“My main role as publisher is to ensure that the Globe has the right management and that management has the resources to accomplish its mission,” Henry said.

 

Uh-huh. 

Then there’s this:

Sheehan, 53, joined the Globe earlier this month as a consultant to help improve advertising sales. As CEO, he will oversee the business side of The Boston Globe.

 

So, to recap:

The Globe’s owner is the paper’s publisher and an adman is its CEO.

Not good news for Globe readers.

Not good at all.

 


Boston Globe Carves Out New Ad Space on Front Page

First it was the strip ad at the bottom of Page One. Now the Boston Globe has inserted advertising into its In the news index that occupies the lefthand side of the front page every day.

Monday’s Boston Globe:

Yes yes – the Boston Herald also posts ads on its front page.

Car Dealer Gets Ad-itorial Package from Boston Globe

Several weeks ago the hardworking staff over at Campaign Outsider posted an item headlined Sign o’ the Time: Everything for Sale at Newsweekly, which included this ad from the December 29 Boston Sunday Globe:

Imagine our surprise, then, when we saw this in yesterday’s Boston Sunday Globe:

Seven things you should know about Ray Ciccolo

Over the last half century, Village Automotive Group has grown into one of the state’s largest automobile dealers, with more than 400 employees at eight locations. President Ray Ciccolo recently chatted with Globe reporter Erin Ailworth about how it all started. Here’s what she found out:

Ciccolo was only 24, but he already owned two coin-operated launderettes when he walked into the Gene Brown Rambler/Volvo dealership in Newton Centre looking to buy a “little, fuel efficient” Volkswagen to replace an old Buickhe had rebuilt from junkyard parts. Instead, he listened to a friend working at the dealership. Ciccolo left with a gas-guzzling Lincoln Continental — it got just three miles to the gallon — and plans to purchase the business . . .

 

And etc.

Not to get technical about it, but there are really eight things you should know about Ray Ciccolo.

We’re not saying there was any explicit pay-for-play arrangement here, but it’s hard to believe that a business editor wouldn’t know if an interview subject had run full-page ads in the paper, especially such self-aggrandizing ones. That might give the average editor pause, yes?

Well, in this case, no.

Coals to Newcastle, there’s also this on Page One of today’s Globe Score section.

When Globe owner John Henry gave a speech to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce the other week, he talked about new sponsored sections like Score that would deliver added valued to advertisers. That led the hardreading staff to wonder what exactly Globe sponsors would get .

We’re wondering even more now.
