University to Boston Herald: Suffolk You!

January 21, 2015

As the hardreading staff has dutifully chronicled, the Boston Herald has been a satellite campus of Suffolk University for years now, including – but not limited to – their joint Press Party Wayne’s World webcast, their Race for Governor tag-teaming of the 2014 Massachusetts gubernatorial election, their Inside the Race for Mayor for the 2013 Boston mayoral race, the John Nucci Connection (sounds like a ’60s British Invasion band, no?), and etc.

So imagine our surprise when this ad turned up not in the bestie local tabloid, but in the Boston Globe.

Inspire that, Heraldniks. Right where it hurts.

Some success story . . .

Boston Herald ‘Press Party’ Crasher

November 1, 2013

Well, more like shaker-upper if you want to get technical about it.

The feisty local tabloid has a new host for Press Party, its weekly media-review webcast, along with a streamlined panel.

The musical chairs featured former Press Party multimedia reporter Katie Eastman taking over the host’s role, while former host (and Herald columnist) Joe Battenfeld moves over to the panel.

(That’s Herald reporter Hillary Chabot and Suffolk University’s Bob Rosenthal in the other two chairs. The fifth chair from previous webcasts is, well, unendowed.)

As for the content of the webcast, we’ll leave that to the hardreading staff at Campaign Outsider.

Meanwhile, in other Herald web news, a splendid reader of Two-Daily Town sent this today:

Have you noticed that they’ve cut the 6 to 9 a.m. slot [on Boston Herald Radio]? If you turn to the radio page in the paper, you’ll see there’s nothing listed. I listened this morning for a bit between 6 and 6:30 and heard an unbelievably lame segment from yesterday’s sports show followed by the beginning of Graham’s Thursday show.

Said radio page:

The rumor mill also has Battenfeld taking over the vacated 6 to 9 slot.

Stay tuned.

Hark! The Herald! (Internet Radio Edition Umpteen)

August 2, 2013

From our Walt Whitman desk

It’s time someone called Social Services. The Boston Herald’s abuse of its news pages is now bordering on the criminal.

For months the Herald has been flogging its Wayne’s World webcast Press Party in the news pages, à la this from today’s page two:

Picture 3

Now the Herald has gone all Mickey Rooney over Internet radio.

(Hey, kids! Let’s put on a radio station! We can use Pat Purcell’s garage!)

That, of course, calls for all the newsvertising that fits, which up to this point has involved half of Page One. But apparently that’s not enough, because today the dicey local tabloid gives it two-thirds.

Picture 1

Plus, it goes without saying, the obligatory inside spread:

Picture 4

(Come to think of it, if it goes without saying, why do we still say it? And don’t you come to think of everything you write or say? Who comes up with this stuff?)

Sorry – we’re back now.

Hard to say what’s most striking about today’s hoopla, but that “state-of-the-art” claim is a good place to start. As the redoubtable David Bernstein tweeted:

Picture 6

Oh – and P.S.:

Picture 7

As for the rest of today’s spread, it’s just one big advertisement in news drag.

You’d think real journalists would be embarrassed to stoop to this.

Then again, it is the Herald.

Globe Joins Herald in Making Radio Waves

August 1, 2013

Day Four of the Boston Herald’s ridiculous/embarrassing newsvertising campaign for its Internet radio launch features the usual abuse of its news pages, starting with Page One.

Picture 1

Then there’s the mandatory two-page spread inside.

Picture 2

Our choice for Plug o’ the Day is this beauty:

Picture 5

That would be the same Suffolk University that’s in bed with the Herald in producing both their weekly Press Party webcast and their Inside the Race for Mayor coverage. As the hardreading staff has previously noted, this creates a glaring conflict of interest for the Herald regarding a major academic institution in Boston, which apparently bothers the feisty local tabloid not at all.

Crosstown, the Boston Globe has decided to jump into the pool with this ad for its RadioBDC webstream.

No doubt the two digital ventures will be at it hammer and tongue for the foreseeable future.

Boston Herald a Suffolk University Satellite Campus

May 24, 2013

There’s some serious co-branding going on at the Boston Herald these days, where the Suffolk University logo is on the feisty local tabloid like Howie Carr on a Bay State solon.

For starters, there’s the Suffolk connection to the Herald’s weekly Press Party webcast, the underdog half of the Great Boston MediaWatch Dogfight with WGBH’s Beat the Press. Here’s the ad from today’s paper:

Picture 11

And here’s how the webcast’s background looks:

Picture 7

Suffolk even gets part of the bug for video packages:

Picture 9

In the Herald itself, Suffolk’s VP of Whatever John Nucci now seems to have his own column:

Picture 14

But there’s no tag or ID for Nucci, just the Suffolk logo.

Wait – there’s more. Nucci also turns up in Press Party packages, just to round things out.

Picture 6

The Nucci column, it turns out, is part of this initiative, which the Herald announced a couple of weeks ago.

raceformayorHerald, Suffolk U. set to give voters a lesson in city politics

Suffolk University and the Boston Herald are joining forces to provide the most comprehensive multimedia coverage anywhere on this year’s milestone race for mayor of Boston.

The university, which already teams with the Herald on the weekly “Press Party” media analysis Web show, brings to the table an array of important tools for voters who want cutting-edge coverage of the mayoral battle.

Those tools includes polling and blogs and Nucci and stuff. So that’s a lesson in something.

But . . . is it just us, or is this a bit much, considering that the Herald is supposed to be sort of covering Suffolk University?

Not to get technical about it.

Our ‘Beat the Press Party’ Bakeoff (Spotlight the Globe Edition)

April 6, 2013

It’s time once again to review the Great Boston MediaWatch Dogfight, especially the rumpus over the Boston Globe’s Spotlight report, Driven to the Edge.

Start as usual with the underdog Boston Herald, which has been hounding its crosstown rival all week over the Globe’s three-part taxidermy of the Boston cab industry.

The Herald’s Press Party segment is here.

Highlights.

The set-up piece accused the Globe of deception and essentially declared reporters should never go undercover, a position host Joe Battenfeld persistently pursued.

And a position Suffolk University’s Bob Rosenthal seconded, asserting that the Globe did a good job but committed an ethical violation because the paper could have gotten the story otherwise – which is nonsense.

Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson and State Rep. Shaunna O’Connell, to their credit, countered that the Globe could not have gotten the story without going undercover.

Over at the Big Dog, WGBH’s Beat the Press (hosted by Emily Rooney), the conversation went this way:

Host Emily Rooney said sometimes the end justifies the means.

The panelists generally praised the Globe story, asserted that you need to cross your T’s and dot your I’s in these situations, and said the Herald was just being the Herald.

Who’s Top Dog?

You tell us.

Hark! The Herald! (‘Party’ Pooper Edition)

April 5, 2013

From our Walt Whitman desk

Yesterday our feisty local tabloid celebrated itself and sang its Press Party with a full-page ad.

Picture 3

Got that – always smart, no-holds-barred discussions from fresh faces with their news noses on the ground and their fingertips on the pulse of the media machine?

Two observations: 1) That has to be painful; and 2) Could this be any more baldly aimed at WGBH’s Beat the Press?

Regardless, to promote tonight’s version of Press Party, the Herald coughs up not a full-page ad but a lousy quarter-page of  – what to call it? – promotorial.

Picture 1

Pikers.

Just in case you’re curious about the promotorial content:

Hark! The Herald! (Press Party Apparatus Edition)

April 4, 2013

From our Walt Whitman desk

The Boston Herald’s relentless self-promotion braved new frontiers with this Joe Battenfeld piece in Wednesday’s edition:

Apparently, the ladder of success at our feisty local tabloid is actually an escalator.

Exhibit A:

Web panelist to U.S. Senate debate moderator in two weeks?

Jaclyn Cashman has unsuspected depth, eh?

Or maybe just undetected deep pockets.
